Scott Douglas Muir, Known as ‘Scotty,’ Remembered for Laughter and Love
A Perrysburg, Ohio, man celebrated for his wit, compassion, and unwavering devotion to family, Scott Douglas Muir, also known as D. Scott Muir and affectionately called Scotty, passed away on October 10, 2025, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was 70 years old. His passing, surrounded by loved ones, marks the end of a life defined by resilience, humor, and a deep commitment to those around him.
A Life Rooted in Family and Friendship
Born on May 9, 1955, to Ruth (Muir) Shaffer and Jack Muir, Scotty’s formative years in Perrysburg were shaped by strong family bonds and enduring friendships. These early relationships instilled in him the kindness and determination that would characterize his life. He was known for possessing both a “tender heart and strong-willed spirit,” qualities that resonated with all who knew him.
A Marriage Forged in Resilience
Scotty’s 39-year marriage to Laurie Smietanski, beginning on Valentine’s Day in 1986, was a testament to the power of partnership. Their wedding, described as beginning with a series of “hiccups” amidst a winter blizzard, ultimately became a symbol of their ability to overcome obstacles with laughter and an unwavering “we got this” attitude. The couple navigated life’s challenges together, building a relationship founded on humor and mutual support.
A Mentor and Friend to Many
Those who knew Scotty remember a man with a larger-than-life personality. He possessed a rare ability to balance seriousness with a playful sense of humor, often lighting up a room with his wit and antics. A natural manager and mentor, he readily shared advice and fostered connections that invariably ended in laughter. He demonstrated deep compassion for those facing difficulties, offering quiet and thoughtful support behind the scenes.
A Legacy of Family
Scotty’s greatest joy stemmed from his family. He is survived by his wife, Laurie; his sons, Chase (Kim McPherson Muir) and Josh (Jessica Eileen); and four granddaughters – Brooklynn, Josie, Lucy, and Maggie – who brought immense joy to his life. He also leaves behind his sister and Saturday morning coffee companion, Cris (John) White, and his brother, Tim Muir. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Muir and Ruth (Muir) Shaffer; his brother, Mark Muir; and his in-laws, Dick and Marie Smietanski.
Celebrating a Life Well-Lived
Family and friends will gather for a Celebration of Life on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Brandywine Country Club from 12–4 p.m. A private interment will be held at a later date.
Scotty will be fondly remembered for his infectious laughter, his unwavering love, and his remarkable ability to find humor in everyday moments. To know him was to love him, and his legacy endures through the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched. As he famously concluded many conversations, “Let’s wrap it up, Laurie!”
