A projected surge in long-term health conditions threatens to pull as many as 600,000 people out of the British workforce over the next decade, a new report warns. Without a meaningful overhaul in how employers prioritize employee wellbeing, this could cost the nation an estimated £36 billion annually.
The Scale of the challenge
The analysis, conducted by the Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH), paints a stark picture of a growing crisis. The anticipated 26% increase in economic inactivity is equivalent to the entire population of Bristol being removed from the labor pool. This escalating trend is driven by a rise in chronic illnesses, including musculoskeletal disorders, mental health problems, adn cardiovascular disease.
“The UK’s productivity crisis is one of the biggest challenges facing our economy and long-term health conditions in the workforce are a major factor in this,” stated a senior official at the RSPH. “We need a basic shift in how we see the role of employers in keeping people healthy backed up by a national standard that covers all UK employees.”
Calls for a New Approach to Workplace Wellbeing
The RSPH is advocating for a fundamental recalibration of workplace practices to better support employees struggling with health challenges. Central to their recommendations is the implementation of a national health and work standard, establishing a baseline level of support to which all UK workers would be entitled.
this call to action comes ahead of the publication of the Keep Britain Working review, led by Sir Charlie Mayfield, expected later this month. The autonomous review is anticipated to outline specific recommendations for both employers and the government to address health-related inactivity and foster healthier, more inclusive workplaces.
The Economic Imperative of a Healthy Workforce
Experts emphasize that addressing workforce health isn’t just a matter of social responsibility, but also economic necessity.According to a policy and research manager at the Health Foundation,”The declining health of the working-age population is one of the biggest challenges facing government. The only sustainable way to meet this challenge is to keep people healthy and in work for longer.”
The Keep Britain Working review represents “a vital opportunity to change this,” the manager added, urging government and employers to prioritize proactive workforce health initiatives through clearer standards and expanded access to specialized support services.
Existing Gaps in Workplace Health Support
Previous RSPH analysis revealed a significant gap in access to workplace health support. Nearly half of the UK workforce currently lacks access to essential preventative measures, such as winter flu vaccinations and cardiovascular disease checks.
A senior research fellow at the Health Foundation highlighted the mutual benefits of investing in employee health. “If we are to reduce economic inactivity and raise the employment rate, harnessing the role of employers will be essential,” thay said. “Doing so would not only benefit government but also employers themselves – through lower staff turnover, reduced presenteeism, and higher productivity.”
Investing in staff, particularly line managers, is seen as crucial to improving both employee wellbeing and overall business performance. Raising minimum standards of support across all workplaces, while simultaneously encouraging businesses to exceed those standards, is considered a key step forward.
Government Response and Future Outlook
A government spokesperson affirmed the importance of the link between good work and good health, emphasizing their commitment to preventative measures through a 10-year health plan. They also noted that the Keep Britain Working review is actively examining how employers can better support employee health and create more inclusive work environments.
“Everyone we can definitely help stay in or return to work isn’t just transforming their own life – they’re contributing to our communities, economic growth and building the healthier, more prosperous nation we all want to see,” the spokesperson concluded. The coming months will be critical as the UK grapples with this looming workforce crisis and seeks to forge a path toward a healthier, more productive future.
