Kevin Smith to Visit Asheville Comic Shop Before Orange Peel Performance
A limited-ticket event will bring the acclaimed filmmaker, comedian, and comic book writer to Comic Envy on November 23rd, offering fans a rare opportunity for autographs and selfies.
Asheville, N.C. – Later this month, Kevin Smith, known for directing cult classics like Clerks and Mallrats, will make a special appearance at Comic Envy, a beloved independent comic book shop in North Asheville, before taking the stage at the Orange Peel. The event, scheduled for Sunday, November 23rd, from noon to 2 p.m., will provide a unique and intimate experience for fans.
The visit came about after Smith, a dedicated comic book enthusiast, proactively reached out to local shops while booking his performance at the Orange Peel. Allison Jenkins, owner, chief librarian, and self-described “comic bounty hunter” of Comic Envy, was thrilled to accept. “It’s probably gonna be the first time he’s been in a store this small in 20 years, frankly,” Jenkins remarked. “When they called me, I thought it was a joke, really. I was like, ‘Really? You sure? Is that even realistic?’”
To ensure a calm and orderly experience for attendees, Comic Envy will be closed to the public during the event, requiring pre-purchased tickets for entry. Smith’s pricing for interactions will be $60 for an autograph, $40 for a selfie, or $80 for a combination of both. Jenkins explained the ticketing process: “We’re just selling tickets per person, where you get to choose what you’d like to buy and pre-pay for it, and then you’re reserved a time slot within a half an hour where we’re going to let each line in. We’re gonna try to make it as leisurely as we can, considering how small we are.”
The event is capped at 100 attendees, and tickets, available for cash only, can be purchased in advance at Comic Envy, located at 333 Merrimon Ave, or at Diamond Thieves, a tattoo parlor at 1060 Patton Ave. Jenkins emphasized that prioritizing local fans was a key consideration in hosting the event.
For those less familiar with Smith’s work in the comic book realm, Jenkins offered several recommendations. She highlighted his popular run on Green Arrow as a standout, as well as his creator-owned titles like Quick Stops, Jay & Silent Bob, and Clerks. Smith has also contributed to titles featuring iconic characters like Spider-Man, including the story The Evil that Men Do, featuring Black Cat. Several of Smith’s comics will be available for purchase at Comic Envy both before and during the event.
