The victims have been identified as specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24.both remain hospitalized in critical condition following the shooting. A senior official stated that authorities are “praying that they survive and that the highest charge will not have to be murder in the first degree,” adding, “But make no mistake, if they do not, that will certainly be the charge.”

The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, allegedly carried out an “ambush-style” attack using a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver. He currently faces charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. Lakanwal reportedly drove across the country to carry out the attack. He has been living in Bellingham, Washington, with his wife and five children, according to his former landlord, Kristina Widman.

Lakanwal entered the United States in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a Biden administration initiative designed to resettle Afghan nationals following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.The program has relocated approximately 76,000 evacuees, many of whom served as interpreters or local staff alongside US forces and diplomats.
Prior to his arrival in the US, Lakanwal worked with the US government, including the CIA, “as a member of a partner force in Kandahar,” officials confirmed. This connection is now a central focus of the terrorism investigation.

Operation Allies Welcome has faced criticism from various political factions.Former President Trump stated the US would “re-examine every single alien” who entered the country from Afghanistan under the Biden administration.
