Hockey Canada Announces 27-Player Roster for 2026 World Junior Championship

Canada is poised to defend its legacy on the world stage, as Hockey canada unveiled a 27-player roster vying for a spot on the national team for the 2026 World Junior Championship, set to take place from December 26 to January 5 in Minnesota.
The team boasts a wealth of talent, including several players already making waves in professional leagues.
McKenna Leads a Star-Studded Roster
Headlining the training camp roster is Gavin McKenna, a highly touted prospect widely projected to be the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The forward returns for his second consecutive year with the Canadian junior program, currently showcasing his skills with Penn State in the NCAA, where he has registered four goals and 18 points in 16 games.
Alongside McKenna, several familiar faces return, including forwards Jett Luchanko, Porter Martone, and Cole Beaudoin, and also goaltenders Carter George and jack Ivankovic. The roster also features three draft-eligible defencemen – keaton Verhoeff (University of North Dakota), Carson Carels (Prince George), and Ethan MacKenzie (Edmonton) – all looking to make their mark.
NHL Experience Bolsters Canadian Lineup
Notably, the Canadian squad includes three players currently skating in the NHL. Zayne Parekh, a 19-year-old defenceman with the Calgary Flames, has recorded one assist in 11 games this season but is currently sidelined with an upper-body injury. michael Misa, the second overall pick in June’s draft, is currently on a conditioning loan with the San Jose Sharks’ AHL affiliate, recovering from an ankle sprain, and has tallied one goal and two assists in seven games. Completing the NHL contingent is Harrison Brunicke, a Pittsburgh Penguins second-round pick from 2024, who has one goal in nine games with the Penguins and two assists in three AHL appearances.
A Blend of Collegiate and CHL talent
The roster reflects a diverse range of developmental pathways, with seven players currently competing in the NCAA and 16 in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). A total of 19 players on the roster have already been selected in the NHL draft – eight from the 2024 draft and 11 from June’s draft.

Aiming to Reclaim Gold
Canada will be looking to regain its championship form after finishing fifth in the past two World Junior Championship tournaments. prior to those results, Canada secured back-to-back gold medals in 2022 and 2023. Dale Hunter of the London Knights will lead the team as head coach,tasked with guiding this talented group back to the top of the podium.
