Rafael Márquez Confirmed as Future Mexico National Team Coach, FMF President denies Reports of Immediate Change

Mexico’s national football program is charting a clear course for the future, with Rafael Márquez firmly positioned to take the helm as head coach after the 2026 World Cup. The confirmation comes from a senior official within the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), who emphatically dismissed recent speculation linking othre managers to the role.This announcement provides stability amidst ongoing evaluations of the current technical staff.
Securing Márquez for the Long Term
The FMF has already secured Márquez under contract,ensuring his transition into the coaching position following the conclusion of the 2026 tournament. “Rafa Márquez is a signed contract, he ends his employment after the World Cup and joins as a coach, it is a plan that is underway,” the official stated during a press conference following the Ordinary assembly of Owners of Liga MX.This proactive approach underscores the FMF’s commitment to a long-term vision for the national team.
Márquez, a legendary figure in Mexican football with five World Cup appearances – Korea-Japan 2002, Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, and Russia 2018 – currently serves as an assistant to head coach Javier Aguirre. While Aguirre’s contract concludes after the 2026 World Cup regardless of performance, reports had surfaced suggesting a potential immediate change, with Antonio Mohamed being considered as a replacement. The FMF official unequivocally denied these claims.
Building Experience and a Future vision
Márquez is actively gaining coaching experience, having observed extensively and participated in the recent U20 World Cup in Chile. “He has observed a lot, he was in Chile… he had a lot of activity, the plan is underway, we want to fulfill it and translate it as his contract says,” the official added. This period is viewed as crucial preparation for Márquez to seamlessly assume the head coaching role, with a broader project extending towards the 2030 World Cup already in motion.
Lillini to Remain with FMF
In addition to clarifying Márquez’s future, the FMF also confirmed the continued employment of Andrés Lillini as the sports director of minor teams. Despite reported interest from other organizations, Lillini has expressed his desire to remain with the federation. “someone like Andrés (Lillini) will always have offers.He is someone vital to our project so we hope he continues. Yesterday I spoke with him and he expressed his desire to continue,” the official explained.
