BBP Leader Calls for Pension Reform, Minimum Wage Hike, and Stronger Crime Penalties
Bursa, Türkiye – Büyük Birlik Partisi (BBP) Chairman Mustafa Destici delivered a forceful address at his party’s Ordinary Provincial Congress in Bursa, outlining a platform focused on economic justice for retirees, a considerable increase to the minimum wage, and a crackdown on criminal activity. The congress, held at the Merinos Atatürk Congress and Culture Center, was attended by key political figures including BBP deputy Chairman Ekrem Alfatlı, Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mustafa Bozbey, and several other local officials.
Destici’s speech centered on the widening disparity between pensions and civil servant salaries, arguing that current levels are unsustainable and unjust. “Pensions were 7,500 liras in 2023,” he stated, “while the lowest civil servant salary was 11,000 liras.Today, the minimum pension is 16,800 liras, but civil servant salaries have soared to 50,000 liras and public worker salaries to approximately 60,000 liras. At least one pension of the retiree has evaporated.” He urged the government to prioritize the needs of pensioners, even if it meant delaying non-essential infrastructure projects. “Let’s not spend on things except for emergencies and give retired people their rights,” he implored, suggesting that an additional salary be added to existing pension payments.
The BBP Chairman also advocated for a significant increase in the minimum wage, proposing a 50% rise. Destici justified this demand by pointing to the current inflation rate of 50% for 2024 and the projected rate for 2025. He emphasized that this proposal wasn’t intended to create difficulties for the government, wiht whom the BBP is aligned in the People’s Alliance, but rather to ensure a fair wage for workers.

Beyond economic concerns, Destici addressed geopolitical issues, specifically referencing the recent visit of Pope Leo XIV to Iznik. He emphasized the historical importance of Iznik, formerly the capital of the Turks, and its importance to both the Christian and Muslim worlds. “Their eyes are still on Iznik and Hagia Sophia,” Destici asserted, adding a firm warning: “We conquered these places with the right of our sword, and those who want to take them back can only take them by paying the same price.” He characterized the Pope’s visit as containing political messages beyond its theological purpose, signaling a continued interest in the region.
Destici also called for a review of penalties for serious crimes,including drug trafficking,betting,and gang formation. He argued that current punishments are insufficient to deter criminal activity and protect citizens. “If you cannot prevent crime in a country, one of the primary places you should look at is the penalties given for those crimes,” he stated. He strongly opposed amnesty for individuals involved in these offenses, particularly those who endanger the lives of others. Moreover, destici condemned all forms of betting and gambling, stating, “Betting, virtual betting, legal betting, illegal betting, exists in every field…To tell you the truth, betting and gambling should not be allowed in this country, whether it is indeed legal or illegal.” He expressed concern about the involvement of professional athletes in betting activities, despite earning substantial incomes.
The BBP Chairman concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the independence and integrity of the Republic of Türkiye, vowing to safeguard its future for generations to come.
