For nearly 140 years, the Royal Standard Hotel in Toora, Victoria, has served as a community hub. But this summer, for the first time in living memory, the iconic pub stands silent, its doors shuttered since February 2025, leaving residents without a vital gathering place.
The closure of the Royal Standard Hotel, located approximately 2.5 hours south-east of Melbourne, marks a significant loss for the small town of Toora. For generations, the pub has been more than just a place to grab a drink; it’s been the heart of the community, a venue for celebrations, and a welcome respite for travelers. The current situation represents the first time since 1889 that the pub hasn’t served drinks during the crucial Christmas and New Year period.
A Storm of Challenges
The pub’s current predicament stems from a confluence of unfortunate events. According to Adrian Darby, the pub freehold owner, the recent setback began when the previous publican was forced to liquidate the business. Darby, involved with the pub for around 15 years, expressed his frustration, stating, “It makes me feel it to heart a bit… it’s a bit of an eyesore; it would be nice to get it back on track.” Cripps’s family history is intertwined with the pub, as his grandparents once owned the establishment, and he believes they would be deeply saddened by its current state.
The sentiment is echoed by long-time resident Trevor Mack, who emphasized the pub’s multifaceted role in the community. “It’s not just a watering hole. It’s our restaurant, our accommodation, our entertainment venue,” Mack explained. “It’s the heart of our town and it hasn’t been open for some time now, so the town suffers because of that.” He recalled a time when the pub was so popular that locals frequently enough needed to book tables, especially during peak season.
Ripple Effects on Local Businesses
The Royal Standard Hotel’s closure is also impacting other businesses in Toora. Anne Roussac-Hoyne, owner of the local bakery, expressed surprise at the pub’s sudden shutdown. “I think everyone understands how critically important a pub is to a town’s life,” she said. Roussac-Hoyne, who has invested considerably in her bakery, is currently seeking a new operator, mirroring the pub’s struggle to find a viable path forward. She poignantly observed, “With no bread and no beer, we’re missing some pretty key ingredients.”
Jennifer Marchington, another Toora resident, underscored the importance of country pubs as essential community fixtures.”You couldn’t ask for a better little place than a country pub; every town needs a country pub,” she stated. Despite the current challenges, Marchington remains optimistic about the pub’s future, believing that the community will rally to support its reopening. “You will see people come out in absolute hordes of support in getting it back open again,” she predicted.
The Broader Value of Pubs in Victoria
The situation in Toora highlights the broader significance of pubs within victorian communities.Matt Dawson, general manager of corporate and public affairs at the Australian Hotels Association Victoria, emphasized that pubs contribute far more than just hospitality. “From sporting clubs to schools, Victoria’s pubs donate nearly $30 million a year to community groups each year,” he noted. A recent patron survey revealed that 85% of Victorians consider their local pub “very important” to their social life. Dawson concluded,”if a pub closes its door,it’s not just a business lost, but an integral piece of the town gone.”
For now, the Toora pub remains locked, fenced off, and silent, a stark reminder of a community’s loss and a beacon of hope for its eventual revival. The town waits, eagerly anticipating the day when the taps flow once more and the Royal Standard Hotel once again becomes the heart of Toora.
