Ahn se-young Sets sights on Historic Undefeated Season After Hard-Fought Malaysia Open Victory

Ahn Se-young, the world’s top-ranked badminton player, has declared an ambitious goal for 2026: to complete an entire season without a single loss. This declaration comes on the heels of a challenging victory at the Malaysia open, signaling a relentless drive to surpass even her own remarkable achievements.

A Test of Will at the Malaysian Open

“Tough match today,” Ahn Se-young acknowledged, highlighting the intensity of the competition. Despite predictions of an easy win – fueled by her extraordinary 11 gold medals from the previous season and an 8-game winning streak against Li – the match proved to be a important test. Ahn Se-young initially struggled, losing the first game 19-21 after relinquishing an early lead.

From Crisis to Comeback: A Display of Championship Mentality

Facing a crisis, Ahn Se-young showcased the mental fortitude that defines her game. After trailing 6-11 in the second game, she mounted a remarkable comeback, scoring seven consecutive points to seize control and ultimately win the game 21-16. The final game was equally tense, with both players trading leads before Ahn Se-young secured the victory with a final score of 21-18.

Though, the hard-fought win also raised concerns about potential fatigue. The New Straits Times noted that Ahn Se-young appeared exhausted throughout the match, breathing heavily even after securing the win. This is likely a consequence of a demanding schedule, having played 77 games (with 73 wins and only 4 losses) in the previous season, followed by a short two-week break.

“I rested a bit, but it still takes time to fully recover,” Ahn Se-young admitted, acknowledging the physical toll. “I trained a lot while preparing for the Malaysia Open. I think I need recovery.”

An Unprecedented Goal: The Pursuit of Perfection

Despite the physical demands, Ahn Se-young remains steadfast in her pursuit of an undefeated season.”That’s my ultimate goal,” she stated, with a determined glint in her eye. “Finishing the year without losing even once is the ultimate goal.”

The New Straits Times highlighted the importance of this ambition, noting that Ahn Se-young’s 2025 performance was already remarkable, but she is now aiming to surpass the records of badminton legends like Lin Dan and Lee Chong-wei. Last year, she achieved a staggering 94% win rate (73 out of 77 games), exceeding the best single-season records previously held by Lin Dan (92.75% in 2011) and Lee Chong-wei (92.75% in 2010).

Challenges Ahead: A Competitive Landscape

Ahn Se-young’s path to an undefeated season will be fraught with challenges. She is scheduled to face Japanese veteran Nozomi Okuhara, the 2017 World Champion, in the round of 16. Beyond that, potential clashes with formidable Chinese players such as Han Yue, Chen Yufei, and wang Ziyi loom large.

The New Straits times emphasized that while an undefeated season is incredibly difficult, Ahn Se-young’s ability to rise to the occasion in moments of crisis makes her a formidable opponent. “She seems to become sharper every time she goes through a crisis,” the publication noted. “Ahn Se-young has already conquered the badminton world. Now her goal is to redefine the meaning of ‘dominance.'”

As the 2026 season unfolds, all eyes will be on Ahn Se-young as she attempts to achieve a feat rarely seen in professional sports – a perfect, undefeated year.
