Spain Boosts Menorca-Madrid Flights to Three Daily in Winter Season

Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Mobility is increasing the minimum number of daily flights between Menorca and Madrid to three during the winter months, a move designed to address consistently high passenger demand even during the off-season. The change, formalized in a recent Ministerial Order, underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining connectivity to the Balearic Islands.
Addressing Peak Demand in the Low Season
The decision to increase flight frequency stems from observed high occupancy levels on the route throughout the winter. Currently operating under a public service obligation, the route will now require a minimum of three outbound and three return flights daily between November 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027. This represents an increase of one daily frequency.
“This modification responds to the need to increase this service given the high occupancy levels also in the low season,” a senior official stated.
Enhanced Travel Options for Residents and Visitors
The bolstered flight schedule will provide greater convenience for both residents of Menorca and visitors traveling to the island. Passengers will benefit from guaranteed early morning departures from Mahón airport to Madrid, and late afternoon return flights. Remaining flight operations throughout the day will be adjusted based on actual passenger demand.
Future of the Route and Potential Tenders
The new requirements will take effect in November 2026, coinciding with the start of the next period of public service obligations. This timing is linked to the expiration of the current exclusive service contract for the route.
Should the existing contract not be renewed, or if no airline expresses interest in operating the route under a free access regime, a new tender will be launched. This tender will explicitly incorporate the requirement for the three daily frequencies mandated by the updated Ministerial Order.
