Adela Gleijer, Río de la plata Stage Icon, Dies at 92
A celebrated figure in Uruguayan and Argentine performing arts, Adela Gleijer passed away this Tuesday at the age of 92. The argentine Association of Actors confirmed the news, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of an artist whose extensive career spanned theater, film, and television, particularly in Buenos aires. the association extended its condolences to Gleijer’s daughter, actress Andrea Tenuta, and her family.
Born in Montevideo on September 20, 1933, Gleijer began her acting journey in her native Uruguay. Her professional stage debut occurred in 1956 at the El Galpón Theater with the production The center forward died at dawn. It was during this time she met Juan manuel Tenuta, who would become her lifelong partner both on and off stage.Together, they became integral to the renowned Uruguayan company, participating in landmark productions such as The Caucasian Chalk Circle and King Lear, establishing a strong foundation for her decades-long career.
Later, Gleijer relocated to Argentina, where she flourished as an artist while maintaining a deep connection to her Uruguayan heritage. She left an indelible mark on the performing arts landscape of both countries, contributing considerably to film and television as well. Throughout her career, she appeared in numerous popular television series, including Celeste, always Celeste, Master and lord, You are my life, Nobody’s women, My family is a drawing, Truth outcome, The man of your life, Vulnerable, Murderous women, Los Roldán, Summer of ’98, Triplets said the midwife, and Poor devil.
Gleijer’s theatrical repertoire was equally impressive, encompassing titles such as Man and Superman, The cold and the hot, Gray of absence, Lupines, The prisoner of Second Avenue, three good women, Greek, vacationers, How much does iron cost?, Dad’s pine tree, Meeting in Rome, Blood bones skin soul, To the victor, and With ink and with blood. She was a dedicated member of the stable casts at the Teatro San Martín and the Teatro Nacional Cervantes, and actively participated in influential theatrical cycles like Teatro Abierto and TeatroxlaIdentidad.
Her contributions to cinema included roles in films such as stolen Flowers in the Gardens of Quilmes,Fidelity,Mr. President, Cerro Bayo, Almost We Didn’t Realize, Somewhere Nowhere, The Man from Underground, contragolpe, and Clinic with Music.
For Gleijer, the boundaries between her professional life and her personal life were often blurred, both deeply rooted in family and her enduring partnership with Juan Manuel Tenuta, who passed away in 2013. “Our daughter Andrea says that we are united by love and humor. And it is true: we cry easily and we laugh with the same ease,” she reflected in a past interview, highlighting the importance of resilience and shared sacrifices throughout her life. she recalled a modest lifestyle, stating, “We are workers and many times we barely had to live from day to day.
