- Margate has undergone a transformation in recent years, attracting artists and celebrities, though gentrification remains a concern.
The singer took too instagram on Monday, April 15, 2024, to share photos and reflections on her visit, stating, “The whole town seems to be inhabited and energised by creativity,” and that “whenever I go there, I feel like I’ve entered a dream.”
Madonna’s visit included time spent with acclaimed artist Tracey Emin, whom she described as “a Pearl. A precious necklace that has been draped around a seaside Town in England called margate.” She shared images of herself with Emin alongside Emin’s artwork in her studio.
She also expressed her enthusiasm for Emin’s artist residency program, writing, “Hungry, possessed, and extremely grateful to have this possibility.” She added, “They all have very touching stories to share and honestly it’s so refreshing to witness them working in such a dedicated way.”
The singer also expressed her fondness for a local Italian restaurant, playfully withholding its name “because then everyone’s going to go there and it only has one table.” Locals speculate she was referring to Bottega Caruso. According to Isle of Thanet News, Madonna was spotted at the Carl Freedman Gallery, Emin’s TKE Studios, and the family-run restaurant, which features a communal dining table, in October 2023.
The Sun reported that Madonna also attended the Off Season grassroots arts festival, held in art studios and warehouses across the town, last weekend.
Emin’s appeal extends beyond Madonna; in August 2023, actor and singer Gina Gershon, known for roles in films like Cocktail and Showgirls, joined Emin at Margate Pride.
Margate’s transformation from a struggling seaside town to a haven for artists and celebrities is notable, though it hasn’t been without challenges. The influx of creative individuals has contributed to gentrification, pricing some long-term residents out of the housing market.
The opening of the Turner Contemporary gallery initially sparked interest in the town’s creative potential, and the moniker “Shoreditch-on-Sea” gained traction when former Libertines singer Pete Doherty opened the Albion Rooms hotel in 2017. Doherty departed Margate in 2020 but returned to play in a pleasant match for Margate FC in 2025.
Other notable residents and visitors include The Crown star Emma Corrin, as well as Lily Allen, sam Mendes, and Olivia Colman, who have been seen enjoying the town’s beaches, coffee shops, art galleries, and independent restaurants.
In 2023, Pedro Pascal, star of The Last of Us, visited the Rhodes Gallery with art podcasters Robert Diament and Russell Tovey for an exhibition dedicated to him, only to find it closed. The trio commemorated the occasion with a selfie captioned “Margate art friends reunited.”
