The 2026 MotoGP season is poised to be a spectacle, with 22 Grand Prix races and a fiercely competitive championship battle. However, the real drama this year is unfolding off the track, as the rider market for 2027 is already generating significant buzz and speculation. What were once dismissed as rumors are gaining traction, and established certainties are being questioned, setting the stage for a dynamic “silly season.”
Aprilia Racing: Securing a Partner for Bezzecchi
Marco Bezzecchi is currently the only rider confirmed for a factory team in 2027, but the question remains: who will join him at Aprilia Racing? Current teammate Jorge Martin’s future is uncertain, particularly after being sidelined during the Sepang test and lacking valuable track time. Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola has emphasized the team’s proactive approach, stating, “Aprilia never sleeps. There are Plan B, Plan C, D…” The team is exploring all options, whether within their existing rider lineup or by attracting talent from other manufacturers, as they aim to build on their 2026 manufacturers’ championship runner-up finish.
Ducati Lenovo Team: The Acosta-Bagnaia Dilemma
The potential movement of Marc Marquez arguably holds the most sway in the 2027 rider market. Marquez has made it clear that his preference is to remain with the Ducati Lenovo Team, and team manager Davide Tardozzi has confirmed that re-signing the #93 is the manufacturer’s top priority, noting they are “close” to an agreement. The uncertainty surrounds the second bike, with no clear indication whether Pedro Acosta or current champion Francesco Bagnaia will fill the seat. Bagnaia himself has acknowledged having “great opportunities” for 2027, while Tardozzi remained tight-lipped, simply stating, “we’ll see.” Despite a successful Sepang test with KTM, Acosta reportedly rated his performance at just 6/10, suggesting his ambition may lie elsewhere.
Honda HRC Castrol: A Potential Reunion with Quartararo?
Honda is emerging as a central player in the 2027 rider shuffle. Reports from Motorsport.com indicate that Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s Fabio Quartararo is considering a move to the Japanese manufacturer, with the 2021 World Champion confirming that “we’re talking with teams, Honda is one.” The identity of a potential teammate for Quartararo remains a mystery, though current Honda HRC Castrol riders Joan Mir and Luca Marini are determined to retain their positions. Honda team boss Alberto Puig has acknowledged Quartararo’s talent, describing him as a “great rider,” but also stated that the team is “talking to a few options.”
Yamaha’s 2027 Challenge: Replacing a Champion?
Yamaha faces a significant challenge following reports of Fabio Quartararo’s potential departure. A possible replacement has been identified: Jorge Martin, the 2024 World Champion. While Martin is currently focused on his return to racing with Aprilia, he remains a highly sought-after rider. All other Yamaha riders are also under consideration for renewal, with Toprak Razgatlioglu (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP) considered the least likely to move after only one season with the team. Yamaha’s leadership, including Max Bartolini, Paolo Pavesio, and Maio Meregalli, are actively shaping the brand’s plans for 2027.
KTM: A Marquez Swap and Beyond?
Rumors suggest a potential reshuffling within the KTM family. Alex Marquez, currently riding for BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP, is reportedly being considered for a move to the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team, potentially replacing Acosta should he move to Ducati. This would leave one seat open, with Maverick Viñales (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) and veteran Brad Binder vying for the position. Viñales has a strong relationship with team boss Aki Ajo, while Binder has been a key part of the Red Bull KTM project since 2020.
Other Riders on the Radar
Several other riders are attracting interest from various teams. Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) is expected to remain within the Ducati family, potentially on factory-supported machinery, as Ducati Corse General Manager has labeled him “the future.” The VR46 Ducati team, owned by Valentino Rossi, is also a coveted destination, with Rossi aiming to return the team to winning ways. Current VR46 riders Fabio Di Giannantonio and Franco Morbidelli will need to demonstrate improved performance after a winless 2025 season to justify their seats.
Looking further ahead, KTM-contracted Moto2 riders Daniel Holgado and David Alonso are potential rookie contenders for the Red Bull KTM Tech 3 outfit. Nicolo Bulega, currently dominating WorldSBK, could also emerge as a candidate for a 2027 MotoGP seat, as he is also testing Ducati’s new 850.
