Charli XCX Stars in New Anti-Romantic Comedy, Erupcja, Premiering April 17
A new film starring pop sensation Charli XCX is set to hit theaters next month, marking another step in the artist’s burgeoning acting career. Erupcja, Polish for “eruption,” promises a fresh take on the romantic comedy genre, blending humor with emotional depth.
From “Brat Summer” to the Big Screen
While captivating audiences with her “Brat Summer” in 2024, Charli XCX was simultaneously developing Erupcja. Though attempts at secrecy were short-lived, the project quickly gained traction during filming. This role is just the latest in a series of upcoming appearances for the artist, with roles already slated in 100 Nights Of Hero, I Want Your Sex, The Gallerist, Faces Of Death, and The Moment throughout 2025 and 2026.
A Plot Twist in Warsaw
The film centers around Bethany, portrayed by Charli XCX, and her fiancé, Rob (Will Madden). Their romantic getaway to Warsaw, Poland, takes an unexpected turn when a volcanic eruption leaves them stranded. According to an official synopsis, Bethany interprets the chaotic event as a catalyst for change, leading her to reconnect with a childhood friend, Nel (Lena Góra), and embark on a journey of self-discovery through the city’s vibrant underbelly.
Erupcja is described as “a delightful anti-romantic comedy about the pains and pleasures of being in love,” suggesting a narrative that subverts traditional tropes. Charli XCX herself expressed excitement about the collaborative process with director Pete Ohs, stating, “The way he talked about making his films felt akin to making an album and the chance meeting also felt equivalent to the conversational and spontaneous nature of his film making. Our processes felt linked in some kind of way and it felt right and exciting to pursue some kind of collaboration.”
A Talented Ensemble Cast
Alongside Charli XCX, Erupcja features a cast including Lena Góra, Will Madden, and Jeremy O. Harris. Notably, Charli XCX and Góra also served as co-writers of the screenplay, alongside Ohs, indicating a deeply collaborative creative vision.
Director Pete Ohs praised Charli XCX’s acting abilities, noting, “Charli is an excellent actress. She is a performer. She understands what it’s like to have a camera pointed at her. She understands how to convey things through all the different ways in which we communicate, whether it’s with body language or your voice or your facial expressions. She had a scene where she cried, without being asked — she could deliver all the goods. She’s a legit actress. I am proud of us for making a movie this way during Brat summer.”
