The annual event, running February 7 through April 4, 2026, is adding a new, scaled character to the festivities: Prince Gator, the son of King Gator, who traditionally leads the parade. The introduction of Prince Gator marks the 31st year of Mardi Gras at Universal Orlando, and aims to inject even more energy into the already vibrant celebration. According to Kelly Malik, Show Director at Universal Orlando Resort, Prince Gator was “hatched with a lot of pizzazz” and is ready to meet fans, sign autographs, and take pictures throughout the day. He’s designed to be a superstar, adding to the overall excitement of the event.
A Family-Friendly Celebration
Universal Orlando’s Mardi Gras differentiates itself from the more adult-focused celebrations in New Orleans, offering a party atmosphere suitable for all ages. The event features a nightly parade with floats created in partnership with Kern Studios, the same company that designs the floats for the iconic New Orleans Mardi Gras celebrations since 1947. Guests can also enjoy live concerts on select nights and a wide array of food and beverage options.
International Flavors and Culinary Delights
A key component of the event is the “International Flavors of Carnaval” aspect, offering a diverse menu of food items from around the world. During a recent appearance on WESH 2, Malik highlighted the authentic New Orleans cuisine available, noting that the red beans and rice and gumbo “transport you to the Big Easy.” She also mentioned specialty cocktails, including a King Cake Espresso Martini, and fan-favorite treats like beignets and mini King Cakes – complete with a baby figurine for good luck.
Beads, Performers, and Parade Spectacle
The spirit of Mardi Gras is embodied in the tradition of throwing beads, and Universal Orlando doesn’t disappoint. Performers roam the park throughout the day, handing out beads, and guests can collect them along the parade route. Malik emphasized the sheer volume of beads available, stating that “pallets and pallets” are used to ensure everyone has a chance to participate in the tradition. The parade itself features King Gator and other elaborate floats, offering a visual spectacle for attendees.
Kern Studios’ Role in the Parade
Universal Orlando partners with Kern Studios to create six signature floats each year, with the creative designs changing annually. Alongside these new floats, the classic floats, including King Gator, return to delight audiences. The partnership with Kern Studios ensures a high-quality parade experience, bringing a piece of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras tradition to Florida.
