Pauley Perrette: Why She Left NCIS & Where She Is Now

by Sofia Alvarez

For fifteen seasons, Pauley Perrette captivated audiences as Abby Sciuto, the quirky and brilliant forensic specialist on CBS’s long-running procedural drama, “NCIS.” Her departure in 2018, while written into the show as a positive move for the character, was shadowed by a complex and ultimately unsettling experience behind the scenes. The reasons behind Perrette’s exit, initially shrouded in speculation, have gradually come into focus, revealing a workplace environment where she felt increasingly unsafe and unsupported. The core of the issue, as reported by multiple sources, centered around concerns regarding the behavior of former co-star Mark Harmon and an incident involving his dog.

The story unfolded slowly, initially through cryptic social media posts from Perrette herself. She alluded to a “machine” working to silence her and spread false narratives, and expressed fear regarding a specific individual. While she didn’t immediately name names, the details eventually emerged, painting a picture of a tense and uncomfortable situation. The catalyst, according to Charles Floyd Johnson, an executive producer on “NCIS,” involved Harmon’s dog. “The dog was Harmon’s, and apparently the dog bit someone,” Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter. “Pauley was a huge, huge SPCA [Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals] animal person. And then the dog kept coming with Harmon, and she felt it wasn’t safe for the show. By the end of that year, she just felt like it wasn’t working for her anymore, and it was time to move on.”

A Growing Sense of Unease

Perrette confirmed these concerns in a series of statements and social media posts, stating she left “NCIS” since she felt “terrified” of Harmon and his dog on set. TVLine reported on her direct accusations, detailing her fear for her own safety. She similarly voiced her distress over the fact that, in her view, show leadership appeared to side with Harmon after the dog reportedly bit a crew member. This perceived lack of support further fueled her decision to leave the show.

In a now-deleted Twitter thread from November 2018, Perrette wrote, “There is a ‘machine’ keeping me silent, and feeding FALSE stories about me,” and continued, “A remarkably rich, very powerful publicity ‘machine’. No morals, no obligation to truth, and I’m just left here, reading the lies, trying to protect my crew. Trying to remain calm. He did it.” The tweet, archived by various outlets, underscored the depth of her frustration and the feeling of being actively undermined.

Harmon’s Departure and Continued Involvement

Mark Harmon ultimately departed “NCIS” in 2021, after 19 seasons as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. TVLine covered his final appearance, noting the storyline allowed for a potential return. Interestingly, Harmon has since returned to the franchise in a limited capacity, narrating the “NCIS: Origins” spin-off, demonstrating the enduring connection between the actor and the show.

A New Chapter: Retirement from Acting

While fans may have hoped for a potential return to acting, Pauley Perrette has definitively closed that chapter of her life. Following her departure from “NCIS” and a brief role on the CBS sitcom “Broke,” Perrette has retired from acting, dedicating her time to documentary filmmaking. Her first foray into producing, the 2023 documentary “Studio One Forever,” reflects a shift in priorities towards authenticity and truth-telling.

Speaking with Hello!, Perrette explained her decision, stating, “At this point in my life I have this deep need to find authenticity in everything. Being an actor, especially at certain points in my life, was a great escape. it’s like a drug because I didn’t have to be me, I could be somebody else. My character didn’t have all of the problems that I was having. It’s why I only watch documentaries. I want the truth. For me, going back to being an actor would be taking away from this life of true authenticity that I’m living 100% of the time.”

Perrette’s story serves as a stark reminder of the potential for challenging dynamics within the entertainment industry and the importance of creating safe and supportive work environments. While the details surrounding her departure from “NCIS” were undoubtedly painful, she has found a new path that aligns with her values and allows her to pursue her passion for uncovering and sharing truth. As of November 2023, Perrette continues to focus on documentary filmmaking, with no current plans to return to acting.
