Bochum football fans have a unique opportunity next week to revisit a little-known piece of German sporting history. Due to high demand, an event featuring VfL Bochum manager Uwe Rösler and club legend Dariusz Wosz – a discussion centered around the final international match played by East Germany – has been moved to the larger Metropolis Kino in Bochum’s main train station. The event, part of the broader “Dein Fußball-Wochenende in Bochum” (Your Football Weekend in Bochum) initiative, will take place on Wednesday, April 15th, at 6:00 PM.
The game in question, played on September 12, 1990, saw East Germany defeat Belgium 2-0 in a friendly match in Brussels. It proved to be the last ever appearance for the DDR national team, just months before German reunification officially took place on October 3, 1990. The significance of that match isn’t just about the scoreline, but about the players who participated, several of whom would later become key figures at VfL Bochum. The circumstances surrounding the team’s formation for that final match were unusual. With the political landscape shifting rapidly, assembling a squad proved challenging. Manager Eduard Geyer faced numerous withdrawals, ultimately fielding a team of 14 players. Remarkably, four players who started that game – Jörg Schwanke, Heiko Bonan, Dariusz Wosz, and Uwe Rösler – would proceed on to represent VfL Bochum, either as players or coaches. Torsten Kracht, who came on as a substitute in the 85th minute, also later found a home in Bochum, according to event organizers.

Uwe Rösler, currently at the helm of VfL Bochum, remembers the match vividly. “Mir war damals schon klar, dass es sich um einen historischen Moment handeln würde. Davon Teil gewesen zu sein, ist etwas Besonderes und kann einem keiner mehr nehmen. Und dann haben wir auch noch 2:0 gewonnen,” Rösler told BOMA Stadtmagazin, a local publication, reflecting on the game. (Translation: “I already knew back then that it was a historic moment. Being part of it is something special that no one can take away from you. And then we also won 2-0.”)
Rösler also noted the later influx of players from the former East Germany – often referred to as “Ossis” – into the VfL Bochum ranks after reunification. “I was also aware that after reunification, many ‘Ossis’ played here at VfL, and quite successfully. Dariusz has naturally become an absolute icon of the club. He is a legend here. It’s nice that I see him more often now; we’ve always gotten along well,” he said. Around 7:15 PM, guests will be served an original Dönninghaus Currywurst from the Bratwursthaus, accompanied by a Brötchen (roll) and a Fiege Pils – a popular regional beer. Non-alcoholic options will also be available, and for those preferring a vegetarian option, pretzels will be offered. The Metropolis Kino is located at Kurt-Schumacher-Platz 13, 44787 Bochum. It’s critical to note, but, that the venue is not currently accessible for those with mobility impairments.
