Google Maps is expanding the rollout of Immersive Navigation and a live speedometer for Android Auto, bringing features to a wider group of users that were previously limited to beta testers or other platforms. While the rollout is not yet universal, these updates are appearing on devices not enrolled in beta programs, according to 9to5google.
Live Speedometer Integration
The addition of a live speedometer to Android Auto closes a long-standing feature gap. According to Android Authority, the feature had already existed for iOS, Android phones, and Apple CarPlay, but was notably absent from Android Auto. The functionality has also been available for years on Google-owned Waze.
The speedometer appears as a floating icon on the dashboard next to the posted speed limit indicator when navigation is active. If no route is set, the tool still tracks the current driving speed. To help drivers monitor their speed at a glance, the read-out changes color—turning yellow or red—if the driver exceeds the posted speed limit, according to reports from Android Authority.
Early reports from Reddit and 9to5google indicated the feature was initially spotted by a driver in Canada using Google Maps version 26.29.02.946673643. Other reports suggest the speedometer is live in India and Canada. Despite the utility, Google considers the feature a reference and not a substitute for a vehicle’s actual speedometer, as noted by Android Central.
Immersive Navigation Rollout
Google Maps is also deploying Immersive Navigation, which the company previously described as its “biggest” update in years. This feature provides more detailed maps and specific directions while on the go, utilizing 3D buildings, improved lane guidance, and easier-to-follow highway interchanges, according to Android Central.
The immersive experience is powered by aerial imagery and Street View, displaying transparent buildings, traffic lights, and pedestrian crossings to help drivers anticipate their route. It also includes contextualized voice instructions and information regarding building entrances and nearby parking, according to begeek.fr.
The rollout of Immersive Navigation has been gradual. A poll of 9to5google readers earlier this month showed that only slightly over 10% of respondents had the feature on their devices. However, it is now appearing more broadly for non-beta users. On Android, the update is signaled by the Gemini icon replacing the Assistant icon in the top-right corner.
Deployment and Availability
Both the speedometer and Immersive Navigation are being deployed via server-side updates. This means that simply updating the app to the latest version does not guarantee immediate access, as Google controls the activation remotely. Consequently, the features are appearing for users regardless of whether they are on the stable or beta software tracks.
Availability may be influenced by several factors, including the specific device being used and the user’s geographic region. While Immersive Navigation has been deployed progressively in the United States across iOS, Android, CarPlay, and Android Auto, the speedometer’s availability may be tied to regions where Google has available speed limit information.
