Cracker Barrel chief executive Julie Felss Masino is stepping down in August, roughly a year after a controversial brand overhaul triggered intense customer backlash, sliding sales, and a 14% stock drop. Former Bloomin’ Brands chief executive David Deno will take over leadership of the Tennessee-based restaurant chain.

Leadership Exit and the Fallout from the Rebrand Debacle

Cracker Barrel announced that Julie Felss Masino will leave her post in August, wrapping up a rocky three-year tenure at the helm of the iconic country-themed chain. Masino will stay with the company until October to assist with the handover to incoming chief executive David Deno, the former boss of Bloomin’ Brands.

The leadership transition follows a turbulent period for the business, which operates nearly 660 sites across 44 states. In 2025, the company announced plans to replace its longstanding “Old Timer” logo with a minimalist design and modernize restaurant interiors by removing cluttered décor and tchotchke-filled walls. The changes triggered an immediate public uproar from loyal diners, social media users, and high-profile figures, including President Donald Trump, who publicly urged the chain to restore its heritage.

“People like what we’re doing. Cracker Barrel needs to feel like the Cracker Barrel for today and for tomorrow — the things that you love are still there. We need people to choose us, and we want people to choose us.”

Public disapproval extended far beyond online commentary. In West Nashville, a “Fire the CEO” billboard styled in the controversial rebranded font was erected along Interstate 40 by Sardar Biglari, the head of Steak ‘n Shake and Western Sizzlin’. The corporate misstep also created financial strain, with the company’s stock dropping 14% immediately following the logo change announcement, wiping out $100 million in market value.

Reversing Course and Winning Back Budget-Conscious Diners

Faced with mounting pressure and declining traffic, leadership suspended the restaurant remodels and abandoned the minimalist logo redesign just weeks after its rollout.

“You’ve shared your voices in recent weeks not just on our logo, but also on our restaurants. We’re continuing to listen. Today, we’re suspending our remodels. If your restaurant hasn’t been remodeled, you don’t need to worry, it won’t be.”

To regain customer trust, the company leaned heavily into nostalgia. Cracker Barrel partnered with America250 to mark the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, offering limited-time menu items, patriotic merchandise like salt shakers and shirts, and a reimagined version of its signature rocking chair.

“Cracker Barrel has always been more than a restaurant – it’s a place where Americans reconnect with traditions, with each other, and with the comfort of familiar food and nostalgic surroundings.”

These operational adjustments have begun to stabilize the business. Store traffic declines have slowed, and the company raised its full-year revenue outlook, sending its stock upward.

The Road Ahead Under New Management

Despite recent operational recovery, Cracker Barrel continues to navigate a challenging financial landscape. Shares remain roughly a fifth lower than at this point in the previous year as the business fights rising operating costs and aggressive competition from rival family-dining chains such as Denny’s and IHOP, which actively compete for budget-conscious diners.

Chairman Carl Berquist expressed confidence in the incoming leadership, noting that Deno brings decades of operational experience from the restaurant and retail sectors, including a prior stint as chief operating officer at Yum! Brands.

Masino will officially depart on August 9, leaving Deno to steer the company through its next phase as it seeks to balance modern operational demands with its foundational Southern heritage.
