Double Fine Lays Off 25% of Staff Following Independence from Xbox

Double Fine Productions has laid off 23 staff members, roughly 25 percent of its workforce, following its recent separation from Xbox to become an independent studio once again. The restructuring comes as the video game developer navigates a new chapter under independent management with its existing intellectual property catalog.

The indie studio behind Psychonauts and other quirky titles is downsizing significantly. Following an initial report by Kotaku, studio founder Tim Schafer confirmed the layoffs in a statement posted to social media on July 28, 2026, noting that the contraction is a painful necessity to ensure the company’s survival as an independent entity.

The Independent Transition and Studio Size

Double Fine had employed around 90 people prior to the staff reductions, placing the loss of 23 employees at approximately 25 percent of its total staff. The studio’s leadership emphasized that the workforce reduction is directly tied to the financial realities of operating independently.

“Today, Double Fine Productions let go of 23 members of our staff. As a small, tightly-knit team, these actions are not taken lightly. Only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action. Our transition to becoming an independent company also means becoming a size that we can sustain.”

The studio stated that it is committed to supporting each affected person as best as it can, thanking them for their contributions to the company’s creative culture over the years.

Xbox Separation and Broader Corporate Restructuring

The layoffs arrive just weeks after Xbox divested from Double Fine as part of a sweeping corporate restructuring led by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. The overarching shift involved massive job cuts across Microsoft and Xbox, including 1,600 layoffs announced earlier in the summer and plans for thousands more amid a push to address profitability and overextended studio acquisitions.

While the divestiture allowed Double Fine to regain its independence, it also stripped away the corporate backing that had sustained the studio since its acquisition in 2019 during the development of Psychonauts 2. Alongside Double Fine, other studios such as Compulsion Games also returned to independent status during the same corporate reset.

Official Statements on Future Operations

In a statement provided to Kotaku, an Xbox spokesperson confirmed that the studio’s separation was finalized, noting that Double Fine kept its intellectual property, catalog, and runway for its next games.

“Double Fine fully returned to independent management earlier this week, with their IP, catalog, and runway for their next games. As they begin their next chapter as an independent studio, we look forward to seeing what they create next. Double Fine is now fully independent and manages its own operations.”

Despite retaining its catalog—which includes atmospheric adventure game Keeper released in 2025 and the pottery-based multiplayer brawler Kiln released earlier in 2026—the studio faces an uphill climb to secure ongoing funding and stability in a harsh market for mid-sized independent developers.

Uncertainty Ahead for Future Projects

Double Fine has not publicly detailed whether it has new projects actively in development following the release of Kiln.
