Auterion has developed an AI-powered flight control system that allows cheap FPV drones in Ukraine to track targets autonomously. Funded by a $100 million contract backed by an officially unnamed European country, the technology replaces manual piloting with low-cost avionics to increase strike precision on the frontlines.
For most of the conflict in Ukraine, First Person View (FPV) drones have relied on human operators to steer them manually into targets. That is changing with a new strike kit from Auterion, which integrates a terminal guidance system designed to run on a Western-made Arm system-on-a-chip costing just $18. The shift moves the “brain” of the drone from a remote pilot to an on-board microprocessor.
The Economics of Autonomy: Shrike vs. Manual Drones
The integration of AI creates a stark price divide between traditional manual drones and the new autonomous versions.
While the Shrike is more expensive than a manual drone, it is significantly cheaper than the $5,000 AI-powered “Hornet” drones developed by Perennial Autonomy. Those higher-end systems are typically used for long-range strikes against Russian energy infrastructure, factories, and ships in the Black and Azov Seas.
This pricing model highlights a growing gap between agile, low-cost AI munitions and traditional Western military procurement. Meier described Western militaries as still buying precision munitions at six or seven figures per shot, which is 30–60 times this price, and procuring drones in batches of dozens that are priced like exquisite aircraft and delivered on timelines measured in years, according to arstechnica.com.
European Funding and the $100 Million Contract
The scale of this deployment is substantial. A $100 million contract, backed by an officially unnamed European country, has funded the production of 50,000 Shrike drones equipped with the Auterion strike kit. While the funding source remains officially unnamed, Reuters reported that Germany is the country providing the funds. This is supported by the fact that Auterion’s Munich-based team is fulfilling the order.
The deployment of these autonomous systems comes as Ukraine continues to struggle with the proliferation of kamikaze drones
—also known as loitering munitions—from both Russian and Iranian sources. These disposable weapons are designed to wait in a target area and strike once an enemy asset is identified, making them difficult to detect and launch from a distance.
Countering Iranian Shaheds and Russian ZALAs
Ukraine’s adoption of AI-driven drones is a tactical response to the increasing use of Iranian-supplied Shahed drones, which Russia has rebranded as Geran
drones. According to CNN, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia ordered 2,400 Shahed-136 drones from Iran, which can carry payloads of approximately 50 kilograms (110 pounds).

Russia also utilizes its own domestic kamikaze drones, such as the ZALA Lancet produced by the Kalashnikov Concern. To counter these, Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, emphasized the need to integrate a variety of air defense systems, including the Patriot system—which stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept of Target.

Gen. Despite the threat, US intelligence suggests the Iranian technology is not a flawless leap forward. Sasha Baker, US Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, told reporters that the data simply does not support the notion that these systems represent a significant technological leap, and noted that there is some evidence already that these drones have experienced numerous failures on the battlefield.
The primary unresolved question remains whether the mass deployment of 50,000 AI-enabled Shrike drones can fundamentally shift the attrition rate of the conflict or if the opposition will develop electronic countermeasures capable of neutralizing these $18 chips before they reach their targets.
