Game Freak, the studio primarily known for developing the Pokémon franchise, has branched out with Beast of Reincarnation. Releasing on Aug. 4, 2026, the action role-playing game represents a significant departure from the creature-capturing mechanics associated with the developer’s long-running series. While the title is viewed as a bold attempt to enter the blockbuster action genre, critics describe the final result as an uneven experience that struggles to balance high-quality action with a confusing narrative.
World and Narrative Setting
The game is set in the year 4026, presenting a post-apocalyptic vision of Japan that blends sci-fi and magic. In this future, humanity has been devastated by a calamity, leading many survivors to transfer their consciousness into robotic golems to survive. The landscape is further plagued by a mysterious blight that transforms wildlife into mutated monsters known as malefacts, which include giant versions of deer, birds, and bears.
Players control Emma, a wandering mercenary and outcast infected by the blight. Emma possesses the ability to absorb the powers of fallen mutants and must traverse the world to grow strong enough to defeat the titular “beast,” an immortal creature whose return is portended by the spreading blight.
These environments range from flooded city ruins and giant craters to rustic forests. To navigate this vertical world, Emma uses plant-like powers manifested through her hair to reach towering heights.
Combat Mechanics and Gameplay
Combat in Beast of Reincarnation centers on a “speedy samurai” style of play, with Emma utilizing a blade and various bows.

Additionally, accumulating certain resources rewards Emma with extra stims for healing during battle. While some critics describe the combat as sublime and creative after a few hours of play, others argue that the execution is rote. According to reports from The Japan Times, most enemies and “nushi”—the blight-infected guardian spirit animals that serve as level bosses—possess only one or two attack patterns, making the combat feel disjointed even on higher difficulty levels.
Critical Reception and Design Flaws
Despite praised art direction and “gorgeous” realistic visuals that evoke the feel of a Studio Ghibli movie, the game has faced criticism for its storytelling and originality.
- Narrative Pacing: Critics note that the story is muzzled by confusing pacing and a “dull” cast of characters. Key explanations are often hidden in a tutorial menu, and some players report not understanding the plot until a dozen hours into the game.
- Character Development: Emma is described as an emotionless individual, though some critics attribute this to poor English voice acting that sounds “bored.” Much of the world’s history is delivered via a “giant exposition dump” late in the story.
This venture follows other smaller non-Pokémon projects from Game Freak, including Tembo the Badass Elephant, Little Town Hero, and Giga Wrecker Alt. However, the uneven reception of Beast of Reincarnation comes at a time of high market interest in the genre; the unaffiliated game Palworld released its official 1.0 version on July 10, following a successful 2024 beta launch that saw 2.1 million concurrent players on Steam.
