Nintendo Announces Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Release Date for Switch 2
The Heroic Games and Four Playable Protagonists
The game is set in the Dagdan Empire’s capital city of Dagsion, where worthy fighters from across the land gather to compete in the Heroic Games in pursuit of a single wish granted by current ruler Solel. The narrative centers on four playable protagonists who enter the gladiator-style tournament: Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. Players can switch between playing each hero at any time with saved progress, allowing them to experience each character’s narrative in parallel.
Each protagonist enters the tournament with distinct motivations:
- Cai: Sets out from the village of Ribeira with childhood friends to win the games and free his imprisoned father.
- Dietrich: Competes alongside new allies to slake his thirst for battle after washing ashore following an attack from an enormous monster.
- Theodora: Leads veteran retainers from the kingdom of Saramis to restore the honor of her goddess and defend her kingdom’s peace.
- Leda: Gives up her prestigious background to seek revenge after learning her father’s murderer is competing in the games.
Time Travel, Balor, and the True Protagonist
While the game initially focuses on the Heroic Games, its true plot reveals a dark twist set five years in the future, where the Dagdan Empire has been devastated by the revived demon god Balor and the four heroes have vanished. The progenitor god Sothis charges a white-haired figure named Eshmel—the game’s true protagonist—with saving the world.

Players can choose to face Balor alone or use the time-traveling powers of the goddess Fortuna to return to the era of the Heroic Games, alter the fates of the four protagonists, and recruit them to prevent the end of the world. According to Kotaku, this choice mimics the faction-selection mechanics seen in Fire Emblem Three Houses.
Classes, Weapons, and Combat Mechanics
Combat in Fortune’s Weave builds on traditional series mechanics, utilizing a grid-based movement system where movement ranges appear in blue and attack ranges in red. Units can employ swords, spears, axes, bows, magic, and gauntlets—including firearm-style weapons equipped with laser sights. Characters can also utilize Combat Arts at the cost of weapon durability, and unique Blaze Arts that consume a protagonist’s life bar in exchange for massive power.
The class system is organized into three distinct tiers:
- Beginner Classes: Five foundational roles, including gladiators handling weapons, diviners wielding magic, and ornius riders with increased movement range.
- Specialty Classes: Over ten classes offering specific abilities, such as armored knights, obstacle-leaping wing soldiers, and line-striking charioteers.
- Advanced Classes: Mastery-level roles such as mobile and heavily armored cataphracts, white-magic-and-spear guardians, and elephant riders.
Players can utilize Fortuna’s Blessing during battles to rewind time to any previous point and redo mistakes after a unit is unexpectedly routed. Outside of standard battles, players can explore dungeons featuring turn-based clashes, manage free time in Dagsion through arena training, shopping arcades, and volunteering at Temple Row to gain temporary stat buffs.
