Carys May of the West Wales Biodiversity Information Centre has identified species such as the notch-horned cleg or horsefly (Haematopota pluvialis) and the intimidating dark giant horsefly (Tabanus sudeticus), the latter characterized by huge eyes close together. According to May, some species, such as certain mining bees, can only be identified under a microscope. These bees are distinguished by how they handle pollen, exiting flowers covered in powder rather than collecting it in leg baskets; the female then seals this powder into her nest with her eggs.

Other sightings in the region include marmalade hoverflies (Episyrphus balteatus), which look like slim wasps and migrate from the continent at high altitudes. May notes that the county hoverfly recorder, acting like a kind of naturalist archangel, is quick to respond to identification queries. In the 19 acres of rough mesotrophic grassland near Cwm Tydu, Steve Chambers, Ceredigion’s botanical recorder, described the landscape as deceptive; while not species-rich, it is rare due to its lack of improvement. Chambers identified the Rosa micrantha, or small-flowered sweet briar, noting its crushed leaves smelled of apples. He indicated he might send the identification to the rose referee, another order of specialist.

One of the more striking discoveries involves the tortoise beetle larva found on knapweed. This emerald green spiked creature employs a highly specific survival strategy: it uses a prehensile anus to collect its own waste, creating a faecal shield—described as a “poo parasol”—that serves as a protective barrier against predators.

Agricultural Shifts and the Three-Week Harvest Gap

While wildlife recorders track biological anomalies, farmers are observing a systemic shift in seasonal timing. The harvest has crept forward by three weeks compared to 20 years ago. Where the process typically began around the third week of July, crops are now often ready by early July. The typical sequence begins with winter barley for seed, followed by oilseed rape (OSR), then probably wheat, with beans nearly always last to be cut, often in September.

This acceleration creates a complex tradeoff for producers. An earlier harvest allows farmers to cut crops during longer daylight hours and eliminates the need to spend money on drying processes. However, the heat that accelerates growth also curbs overall yields because plants are unable to ripen properly.

Critical Moisture Thresholds and Temperature Risks

The viability of the harvest depends heavily on precise moisture levels to prevent storage issues such as pests and moulds. Wheat and barley must remain below 15% moisture, while oilseed rape (OSR) must be below 9% to be acceptable to merchants.

Extreme heat is now pushing these numbers to precarious levels. In France, maize crops have reportedly begun “packing up,” and OSR moisture has dropped as low as 3% due to sweltering temperatures. For UK farmers, the critical threshold is 35C; at this temperature, pollination becomes unviable and the plant simply shuts down.
