That mission carried two commercial lunar landers: Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost 1 and Japan-based ispace’s Resilience lander. While missions to low-Earth orbit routinely direct spent upper stages back into the atmosphere to burn up, deep-space lunar missions require vastly different disposal strategies.

Because the journey demanded high energy, the rocket’s second stage used up all its remaining fuel to reach the deployment point and was left floating aimlessly in space. SpaceX carried out a different maneuver to ensure the upper stage remained safe per appropriate regulations, but that maneuver did not deorbit the hardware. Over the following months, natural forces took over.

Julianna Scheiman, SpaceX director of NASA science and Dragon programs, stated that what had happened was essentially a mixture of solar activity and gravity forces putting the object on a path toward the moon.

Independent astronomers first identified the trajectory using publicly available tracking data, prompting confirmation from the Center for Near Earth Object Studies. Weighing 4 metric tons—or approximately 8,800 pounds—the metal body traveled toward the lunar surface.

Impact Speed, Crater Estimates, and the Search for Debris

The discarded rocket hardware collided with the moon at approximately 5,400 miles per hour, equivalent to 8,690 kilometers per hour. The impact was scheduled for 2:35 a.m. ET (0635 GMT) on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, near the Einstein and Bell craters on the moon’s western limb. The collision released energy comparable to about three tons of TNT.

Because the crash occurred on the moon’s sunlit side, the impact flash lasted less than one second and proved too dim to spot with the naked eye from Earth. Scientists anticipate the collision carved out a crater roughly 18 meters wide and 4 meters deep, though a separate scientific study projected a crater measuring 20 to 30 meters across. Observers noted that confirming the exact scar will require comparing before-and-after telescope images.

However, lighting conditions and the location of the western limb make immediate visual confirmation difficult.

What Scientists Hope to Learn from the Unplanned Lunar Strike

Artificial impacts on the moon remain rare. A Chinese rocket stage struck the lunar surface in March 2022 after completing a lunar test mission, and NASA intentionally crashed a rocket stage in 2009 to study impact mechanics. Researchers view the unplanned Falcon 9 impact as a rare empirical test.

Dr. Paul Wiegert, professor of astronomy and physics at Western University in Canada, remarked regarding what happens when an object crashes into the moon that while they know it makes a crater and of course ejects material, they do not really understand that process in great detail.

Researchers aim to study how the lunar surface responds to high-speed kinetic energy, measure impact flash properties, and track seismic data generated by the event. Understanding how dust and ejecta travel across the vacuum of space provides critical baseline data for future missions.

The collision underscores a mounting environmental challenge around Earth’s nearest neighbor. Independent astronomer Bill Gray noted that the event highlights a certain carelessness in how leftover hardware is discarded in deep space.

Specialist Jimi Russell, NASA Public Affairs, noted that the impact posed no danger to Earth and that NASA scientists were planning to collect lunar data from the event and refine techniques for tracking objects in space.

In the immediate term, researchers await clear telescope data from ground stations and lunar orbiters to verify the crater and measure the dust plume kicked up by the descent.
