A two-person startup has developed software to program existing microwave buzzers, aiming to replace grating appliance alarms with softer sounds without requiring new hardware.

For decades, operating a kitchen appliance has meant enduring a piercing, alarm-like tone. Nearly every microwave sounds identical when a timer hits zero or a button is pressed, relying on cheap technology that prioritizes cost over acoustic comfort. Now, a sonic-branding studio wants to overhaul that auditory experience using the microcontrollers already hidden inside everyday kitchen units.

Why Microwave Beeps Sound So Annoying

The near-universal irritation of modern kitchen appliances largely comes down to cost. Manufacturers rely on passive piezoelectric buzzers to generate sounds. These simple speakers vibrate when electrically charged, producing the sharp tones familiar to anyone waiting on a late-night meal. Popularized by Japanese manufacturers in the 1970s, passive piezo buzzers cost mere pennies. They remain widely used across alarm clocks, smoke detectors, retro mobile phones, and kitchen units because they are versatile and exceptionally cheap.

However, that hardware comes with strict limitations. These buzzers are restricted to basic adjustments in frequency and duration, rendering them incapable of nuance or pleasant tone. While companies could theoretically install traditional speakers and playback systems into their units, doing so would be too expensive and complex for an inexpensive appliance that might retail for around $80.

Upgrading Appliance Audio Without New Hardware

Starling, a sonic-branding studio founded by sound designer Joel Corelitz and creative strategist Colin Coogan, aims to bypass the hardware limitation entirely. Collectively, the pair has previously worked with major clients including Sony, Netflix, Microsoft, and Ford. Turning their attention to kitchen appliances, they built a software tool called Microwave Sound Bench to program the buzzer’s frequency and duration using an Arduino microcontroller.

Because most consumer units already contain microcontrollers, appliance makers would not need to redesign their hardware stack. A manufacturer would just need to add new C++ code to the existing internal components. This software-based approach allows developers to craft softer, more tactile button sounds, alongside short sequences of chirps and tones that replace grating alarms with melodic cues.

The sources do not provide a quote regarding “delighters” or “magical” product features.

Programming the piezo buzzer in this manner allows kitchen units to assign distinct audio cues to different functions. Appliance brands could eventually develop unique sonic identities, giving products from rival manufacturers a distinct acoustic feel.

Partnerships, Margins, and the Future of Kitchen Sound

The creators state they would happily collaborate with major appliance manufacturers like Samsung or Panasonic to bring redesigned audio profiles to actual consumer products. Yet they remain relaxed about the prospect of hardware brands adopting the technique independently.
