A Long Road Back from Achilles Surgery
The victory marks a remarkable turnaround for the 25-year-old Olympic champion who underwent surgery on his left Achilles tendon in late January. That injury severely disrupted his 2025 season, culminating in a difficult outing at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo where he finished 10th in the 5000m and failed to advance from the first round of the 1500m.
Coming into Birmingham with only six weeks of dedicated training under his belt, the Norwegian maintained a cool exterior. He casually glanced at his watch as the gun went off, settling into the middle of the pack during a slow opening kilometre that clocked in at 2:45.
“If you’re waiting for the perfect preparation, perfect conditions, perfect timing, you’ll be waiting your whole life. Anyone who has watched me race over the years will know that competition is what drives me. I am healthy, training has been going well and after discussing with my team, we reached the conclusion that there is no reason not to race.”

Tactical Battle on the Alexander Stadium Track
As the race wore on, the pacing duties fell largely to France’s world 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier and Germany’s Florian Bremm. With roughly four laps remaining, Ingebrigtsen began creeping up the outside, though he briefly found himself boxed in behind Gressier as the penultimate lap commenced.
With 150 metres remaining, Gressier made his decisive bid for the front. Ingebrigtsen waited, biding his time until roughly 60 metres from the tape. When he finally slammed his foot on the gas around the final turn, neither Gressier nor Bremm had an answer for the acceleration.
Ingebrigtsen powered through the finish line in 13:15.29 to extend his reign in the event to four consecutive European titles. Germany’s Florian Bremm secured silver in 13:15.60, while France’s Etienne Daguinos edged past Gressier in the final strides to claim bronze in 13:16.09, leaving Gressier fourth in 13:16.36.
Unbeaten Continental Legacy and What Lies Ahead
The triumph in Birmingham preserves an unblemished record for the Norwegian at the continental championships, bringing his total streak to 15 races won across both the 1500m and 5000m events. It also marks his seventh career gold medal at the European championships.
Notably, Ingebrigtsen opted to bypass the 1500m in Birmingham, leaving Britain’s Jake Wightman with one less rival to navigate in the shorter distance as the competition runs through August 16 at Alexander Stadium. By restricting his entry to the 5000m, the two-time Olympic champion maximized his chances on a shortened training base.
For now, the champion has proven that his finishing kick remains untouched by months away from the starting line.
