Jackie, the internationally famous bald eagle whose livestream was followed by millions of viewers as she raised chicks at Big Bear Lake, died on Monday at the age of 14, according to the Mytwintiers.
Jackie the Bald Eagle Dies at 14 After Intensive Medical Treatment
The beloved raptor passed away in the early hours of the morning following more than three weeks of intensive medical care. Jackie had been brought to the rescue center on July 18 after she was found weak and unable to fly along the shores of Southern California’s Big Bear Lake following a scuffle with younger eagles. Experts at the center discovered she was suffering from severe anemia and suspected she had been sick for weeks before the fight grounded her.
Intensive Medical Interventions and Around-the-Clock Care
During her time at the facility—tracked officially as Patient 26-519—the veterinary team and consulting specialists administered round-the-clock monitoring, oxygen therapy, supportive treatment, a life-saving blood transfusion, a bone marrow biopsy, and a contrast computed tomography scan. Despite performing advanced testing and doing everything humanly possible, experts stated they could not determine the underlying cause of her illness.
Her condition continued to deteriorate over her final days. In a public statement, the center’s staff noted that every decision was guided by the available medical evidence, her welfare, and our responsibility to do what was in her best interest,
adding, Our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her.
Following her death, Jackie’s remains were transferred into the care of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Global Fame and a Lasting Conservation Legacy
Jackie originally hatched in Big Bear Valley in 2012, becoming the first recorded bald eagle chick to do so in the area. Initially named Jack before her larger female proportions became apparent, she eventually formed a long-term pair bond with a male eagle named Shadow. Millions of devoted fans worldwide tuned into the live nest camera operated by the environmental education non-profit Friends of Big Bear Valley to watch the pair endure harsh weather, defend their territory, and raise multiple clutches of eaglets, including Luna and Sandy.

Beyond internet stardom, Jackie and Shadow inspired a massive $10 million conservation effort by the Friends of Big Bear Valley to permanently protect 63 acres of local lakeside land known as Moon Camp from development. That fundraising campaign drew backing from local schools and high-profile donors, including OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman and his wife, Anna.
Shadow’s Future and Life at the Nest
In the wake of Jackie’s death, observers watching the nest cam have noted that Shadow has been spotted with a new eagle named KD1. According to wildlife officials, surviving eagles frequently find new mates shortly after losing a partner and often continue using the same nesting site. Supporters continue to monitor the habitat as nature unfolds in the Big Bear territory.
