The death toll from a ferry disaster on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has risen to 93, making it the country’s deadliest transport disaster, according to state media.

The ferry, traveling from Kariba town to rural communities, overturned on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe’s largest man-made lake, after encountering strong waves. The death toll, initially reported at 44, surged to 93 as divers recovered bodies drifting toward Zambia, according to the BBC.

Discrepancies in Passenger Numbers and Rescue Efforts

Conflicting reports emerged about the ferry’s passenger count. The ferry’s official capacity was 90, but survivors described it as “overloaded” with goods and passengers, leaving life jackets buried under luggage. The life jackets were buried under the luggage, and not more than 30 people managed to get them, said Itayi Marumisa, a trader from Mola village, as reported by the BBC.

Relatives of victims face harrowing identification challenges. Provincial Affairs Minister Marian Chombo told the Herald that we are running out of time and DNA may now be needed to assist in the identification process. At least 83 victims have been identified, including 39 children, according to police.

Survivor Accounts and Criticism

Survivors recounted the disaster’s chaos. Marumisa described children screaming and passengers vomiting as the captain did not seem to care, while a local councillor noted distressing cases where a child lost both parents and other siblings. The BBC cited Tight Bhusumani, a Mola representative, who called it a difficult time for his community, with children in particular affected.

Criticism of the aging ferry and delayed rescue efforts intensified. President Emmerson Mnangagwa condemned the tragedy as evidence of serious deficiencies in our maritime capabilities, urging immediate reforms. The AP article quoted the president stating, our places of recreation do not become death traps to the innocent. Officials also faced scrutiny for the lack of safety measures, with one survivor noting the captain’s indifference to the crisis.

Government Response and Calls for Reform

Mnangagwa declared a state of disaster, mobilizing resources for recovery and victim support. The Herald noted the ferry was a vital and cheap transport link for rural communities, with many passengers taking their children home for school holidays. However, the disaster has sparked demands for stricter maritime regulations. Chombo emphasized the need for action, while the BBC highlighted the lake’s significance as a hydroelectric and fishing hub for both Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Search efforts continue, with divers recovering bodies further from the sinking site. The AP article noted the lake’s vast size—more than 200 kilometers long—and its role supporting transport and fishing. Yet the tragedy has underscored systemic neglect, with Mnangagwa acknowledging the urgency of addressing “deficiencies” in maritime capabilities.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts and Unanswered Questions

As of Tuesday, bodies were being recovered further away from the scene of the sinking, according to a police statement. Families like Collen Ndandalika’s, who lost his wife and three children, face prolonged grief. I still can’t believe this is a real world I am living in, he said, per ZBC. The AP article noted the ferry’s route through rural communities and fishing camps where roads are damaged and public transport is scarce or virtually nonexistent, highlighting the vulnerability of those relying on such transport.

The disaster has reignited debates over infrastructure investment and safety standards. While the government pledges reforms, survivors and families urge swift action. As the search for missing passengers continues, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglecting critical public services. The final death toll and full accountability for the ferry’s condition remain under investigation.
