How AI Datacenter Demand Crushed the $600 Handheld

The central obstacle facing Sony’s upcoming mobile hardware is the soaring cost of LPDDR memory, particularly the LPDDR5X standard. Originally designed for low-power mobile electronics, this memory type has become essential for high-end AI servers deployed in datacenters at scale.

Hardware leaker KeplerL2, posting on the NeoGAF forums, stated plainly that a $600 price point for the portable system is definitely not possible right now due to intense memory price increases tied directly to datacenter demand. That sentiment was echoed across hardware tracking circles, with analysts noting that speculative datacenter buildouts have thoroughly saturated the world’s memory supply.

The memory and storage crises have already driven powerful PC gaming handhelds to high price levels. Even Valve’s aging Steam Deck has felt the squeeze, with its base model climbing to $789. Sony’s proposed handheld, rumored to feature a Canis APU with Zen 6 LP cores and LPDDR5X-8533 memory across a 192-bit bus, is colliding directly with these macroeconomic headwinds.

Soaring Bill of Materials and the Gen-Six Hardware Squeeze

The financial pressure extends well beyond the portable model. The bill of materials (BOM) for the standard living room PlayStation 6 console has climbed to approximately $960, representing a jump of roughly $200 from earlier estimates. As memory prices remain elevated, these figures place intense pressure on Sony’s pricing strategy across its entire next-generation hardware lineup.

Market dynamics also highlight a stark contrast in how component supply is secured. Sony’s CFO noted that the company has already locked in sufficient memory supply for 2026, meaning the current PlayStation 5 likely will not see an immediate price hike. By comparison, competitors like AMD purchase memory on a quarter-to-quarter basis, leaving Radeon GPU prices vulnerable to ongoing fluctuations.

Project Amethyst and Universal Compression

Amid the hardware cost crisis, technical partnerships are attempting to ease the burden on developers and manufacturers alike.
