Police fatally shot a 29-year-old armed suspect who shot and injured an employee at a Lodi, California, McDonald’s on Monday morning. Officers responding to a disturbance call heard gunfire inside, entered the building, and engaged in an officer-involved shooting that left the restaurant temporarily closed and nearby schools on lockdown.
A Monday morning order at a McDonald’s restaurant along West Lodi Avenue transformed into a chaotic crime scene when an armed man opened fire inside. Local authorities responded to the establishment near the intersection of Church Street at approximately 9:30 a.m. following reports of a disturbance involving a weapon.
Arriving officers confronted an active shooter situation inside the business at 200 W. Lodi Ave., where employees and customers found themselves trapped by the sudden violence.
Active Gunfire and Police Response Inside the Restaurant
When patrol units arrived, officers immediately heard gunshots inside, and they heard screaming as the confrontation escalated. Police made entry into the building, leading directly to an officer-involved shooting.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Jonhatan Anguiano, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel declared dead at the scene.
One restaurant employee sustained gunshot wounds during the incident and was transported to a hospital. Officials confirmed the wounded staff member was listed in stable condition.
No law enforcement officers suffered injuries during the encounter.
Drive-Thru Witness Accounts of the Lockdown
Outside the building, motorists waiting in the drive-thru line experienced the unfolding emergency in real-time. Cheryl Steneck, one of the drivers trapped in the lane, recounted speaking with an employee through the intercom before shots rang out.
Steneck described how she and the employee both just didn’t know what to do. We both said we would pray, and then all of a sudden, we heard four gunshots being fired within.
With police vehicles sealing off the exits and armed officers taking positions behind car doors, Steneck remained trapped in the drive-through, with a vehicle in front of her and police vehicles behind and around her until officers directed motorists out of the line individually.
School Precautionary Measures and Area Closures
The police activity forced immediate safety protocols across the surrounding neighborhood. Two nearby schools, Clyde W. Needham Elementary and Needham West, were placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Lodi Unified School District spokesperson Brittanie Arnett noted that while classroom activities continued normally inside the buildings, students remained restricted from going outside during the lockdowns, which lasted approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
Law enforcement closed off Lodi Avenue between Church and Huchins streets, restricting traffic while investigators processed the scene.
Investigation Protocol and Department History
Because the incident involved municipal police officers discharging their firearms, a multi-agency investigation was initiated. The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office leads the inquiry in conjunction with the California Department of Justice, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Corporal William Hinton told reporters during a Monday afternoon briefing that investigators believe the event was isolated, emphasizing that there’s no more outstanding threat to the public.
The shooting marks a rare event for the police department. Hinton noted that the agency had not been involved in an officer-involved shooting in at least the last five or six years, with the city’s previous comparable incident occurring in November 2019.
