DLSS 5 mod also works on RTX 40 series GPUs, RTX 4090 tested with Control using custom-patched DLSS 5 DLL

An unreleased DLSS 5 DLL file discovered in an early-access build of NBA 2K27 has been successfully modded by players to run on older RTX 40-series GPUs, including an RTX 4090, raising questions about Nvidia’s upcoming neural rendering technology and its performance impact ahead of its scheduled autumn launch.

The surprise discovery began when developer Renan Maniero spotted a file named nvngx_dlssnr.dll inside an early-access build of NBA 2K27, representing an early peek at Nvidia’s upcoming neural rendering technology. While Nvidia originally previewed DLSS 5 during a keynote at its annual GTC event following the January introduction of DLSS 4.5, the company stated the technology is slated to launch this fall. The leaked library quickly escaped into the hands of the modding community, leading to rapid experimentation across various titles before any official release.

Modding the Leaked DLL onto Ada Lovelace Architecture

Nvidia built the leaked DLSS 5 tool specifically for Blackwell RTX 50-series hardware, compiling binaries that targeted the sm_120 architecture without native support for older generations. However, modders on the RenoDX Discord server utilized ReShade and RenoDX to force the files into games that lack official support. A modder identified as “Uncle Burrito” tackled the architectural barrier directly by hunting down incompatible binaries and swapping in CUDA binaries built to support the Ada Lovelace architecture. Tom’s Hardware subsequently confirmed that the patch works on an RTX 4080.

Demonstrating the patch in a video running Control on an RTX 4090, Uncle Burrito showed that DLSS 5 operates similarly to demonstrations on RTX 50-series hardware. This modification suggests that Nvidia’s hardware requirement for the new feature is artificial, proving that the company possesses the technical capability to port DLSS 5 to older architectures if desired. Older cards like Ampere, however, present a tougher technical hurdle because they lack native FP8 support altogether.

Performance Penalties and Visual Artifacts in Leaked Footage

Players testing the modded software have reported substantial performance drops alongside mixed visual results. In tests with Control, an RTX 4090 dropped from roughly 130 frames per second down to 82 frames per second, representing a 58% reduction in performance.

Beyond frame rate costs, the early model has sparked intense debate over visual fidelity. When enabled in Control, the model altered character models, causing protagonist Jesse Faden to display deeper facial lines that made her appear older than her approximate 35 years of age, while her hair lost its distinct red sheen in favor of a deeper burgundy. Observers noted that the AI model operates as a real-time filter that reinterprets scenes rather than adhering strictly to physical-based rendering pipelines that designate specific materials like wood and metal.

Jakub Knapik, Vice President of Art and Global Art Director at CD PROJEKT RED, stated that thanks to DLSS 3.5’s smart technology, fuelled by AI rendering power, players can experience Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty’s newest location Dogtown at its very best, featuring sharper images, more accurate lighting, and the highest frame rates possible.

Developer Controls and What Lies Ahead This Fall

Nvidia has previously acknowledged that the technology takes a game’s color and motion vectors for each frame as input, using an AI model to infuse scenes with photoreal lighting and materials anchored to source 3D content. To prevent the model from overriding artistic intent, Nvidia includes dedicated modifiers for developers. The company designed the controls so artists can determine where and how enhancements are applied to maintain each game’s unique aesthetic, featuring an on-and-off switch alongside sliders for neural rendering intensity and style.

Major publishers including Bethesda, Capcom, Hotta Studio, NetEase, Tencent, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros. have indicated plans to support DLSS 5 in upcoming releases. Whether Nvidia will officially extend support to Ada Lovelace cards like the RTX 4090 when the software officially ships remains entirely unconfirmed by the manufacturer, leaving the community to weigh early, rough modded builds against the polished version arriving later this year.
