A group of soldiers in Niger rebelled against officers at a key military base and opened fire on sensitive locations in the capital of Niamey, in an apparent collective mutiny and threat to the country’s ruling military junta, according to authorities reported by the Associated Press. Sustained gunfire and explosions echoed overnight into Saturday, rattling the city.

The targets included Niamey’s main airport, which houses the military air base known as Base 101, and the Plateau administrative district where the presidential palace and key government institutions are located. State broadcaster RTN and national television were temporarily knocked off the air following the overnight violence before later resuming broadcasts with a message confirming that mutinous soldiers had fired on sensitive sites, though security forces had acted quickly to contain the disturbance.

Defense Ministry Response and Evolving Control

By late morning, Niger’s Ministry of Defence stated that the armed forces were gradually retaking sites seized in the overnight assault, but security sources indicated that mutineers remained at the airport by the afternoon and the overall situation remained unclear. The defense ministry noted that the mutineers attempted to detain some of their comrades at the military air base, in what Defense Minister Gen. Salifou Mody characterized as a break with the discipline and military regulations.

The whereabouts of military leader Abdourahamane Tchiani were unclear, and loyalist troops were dispatched to retake control of the airport either through negotiations or by force.

The ruling military council, known as the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, issued a call for unity on Facebook, stating: Our Defense and Security Forces are mobilized for the Defense of the Fatherland. Let us remain united, vigilant and supportive.

Frontline Frustrations and Regional Security Strains

According to security sources and researchers, some of the mutinous soldiers originated from the southwestern localities of Ouallam, Tera, and Dosso—regions heavily impacted by insecurity and close battles with regional Islamic State and al-Qaeda affiliates reported by Reuters.

Russian Assistance Requested Amid Internal Crisis

Faced with the insurrection, Nigerien military authorities requested assistance from Russia’s Africa Corps to suppress the mutiny, according to statements from Moscow’s ambassador to Niger, Viktor Voropayev, as quoted in Russian media reported by AP News. The Africa Corps is stationed at the airport base to provide security support to the country, and the ambassador stated that the mutineers had been ordered to lay down their arms, though it remained unverified whether the requested support was actively provided.

Niger has been ruled by military officers since the July 2023 coup that ousted elected President Mohamed Bazoum. Observers emphasize that the latest mutiny places severe additional pressure on a military regime already overstretched by relentless jihadi violence across multiple fronts.
