Massive flash floods in a border region shared by Nepal and China have killed at least 160 people and left hundreds missing, according to The Associated Press. The disaster struck after a glacial collapse in the warming Himalayan region sent a destructive surge of mud, ice, and meltwater crashing through river valleys on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Flash Floods Kill At Least 160 After Himalayan Glacial Collapse
Police in Nepal reported at least 157 fatalities, while China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported at least three deaths and 265 missing individuals in the Tibet region’s Gyirong County near the national border, as reported by The Associated Press. In total, authorities and officials have reported more than 1,300 people missing across Nepal and Tibet, a figure that includes dozens of foreign nationals.
Trigger and Destructive Surge
Monitoring networks initially recorded a magnitude 4.4 earthquake early Wednesday morning about 66 kilometres north of Kathmandu, near the border. However, further analysis determined that the seismic event was caused by the impact of a glacial collapse five kilometres above sea level crashing into a lake below, which had formed following a previous landslip.
The resulting avalanche created a fast-moving mixture of rock, gravel, boulders, and sediment. Jon Tunnicliffe, an associate professor in river science at the University of Auckland, explained that this dense sediment load is what makes such cascades exceptionally dangerous, allowing them to destroy bridges, buildings, and radically reshape river channels.
The primary bulk of the debris traced a continuous run of nearly 100 kilometres through the Lhende Khola, Bhote Koshi, and Trishuli rivers, according to NDTV. The torrent destroyed areas across Nepal’s Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts. River levels rose dramatically; at Galchhi, water levels reportedly rose by as much as nine metres within thirty minutes. At least 19 bridges and nearly 40 kilometers of road were swept away, and more than 10 hydropower projects went offline, taking out over 12% of Nepal’s electricity capacity.
Impact on Foreign Nationals and Pilgrims
The sudden deluge left residents with very little time to escape. When I reached Dhunge bazaar, in half an hour, the flood came and damaged all the market. People were preparing to go to office then,
local resident Shoyam Rajbhandari told The Associated Press. How many people are missing or dead, we don’t know.
Nepal officials reported that 403 people, including 341 foreigners, were missing. Among them were 133 Indian citizens on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a sacred site for Hindus. The missing also included 47 individuals from the United States, 34 from Australia, 33 from Britain, 24 from Canada, and four from Russia. Additionally, at least 62 missing Nepali citizens were among hundreds of locals trekking in the Gosaikunda Lake area in the hard-hit Rasuwa district, coinciding with the local festival of Janai Purnima. At least 28 police officials were also reported missing.
Rescue Efforts and International Response
Government spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel stated that Nepal has asked both India and China to assist with rescue operations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah to offer support, stating on social media that India is prepared to provide all possible types of humanitarian assistance and that teams are closely coordinating on rescue and relief efforts. Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that the British government will do everything possible to support British nationals affected by the floods.
Meanwhile, authorities have warned residents in several districts to stay away from the swollen banks of the Trishuli, Bhotekoshi, and Narayani rivers. Further downstream across the border, India’s Bihar water resources department monitored rising discharge levels at the Gandak barrage in Valmikinagar, opening all 36 gates as water flow peaked. China’s Ministry of Water Resources also issued warnings regarding a new barrier lake near the border that is overflowing and carries a high risk of breaching.
