She confirmed she will continue to serve as the MP for Witham in Essex while taking on a fresh international assignment. Her new position is intended to strengthen links with sister parties and centre right movements around the world, with Dame Priti stating on social media that she was pleased to continue supporting Kemi and the Conservative Party in a new role strengthening relationships with fellow conservatives and centre-right parties around the world.
Reshuffle Triggers: Maternity Leave and Mayoral Ambitions
The leadership shuffle was prompted by concurrent departures and upcoming family leave across the shadow cabinet. Sir James Cleverly resigned from his post as shadow housing secretary to focus on setting up a campaign to run for London mayor, creating an immediate vacancy that Badenoch will need to fill.
Although Cleverly has stepped down from the front bench, he has not yet been selected as the party’s candidate for the May 2028 election, nor has he resigned as the MP for Braintree.
