Google’s Gemini app surpassed one billion monthly active users, hitting the milestone faster than any previous product in company history.
Google has officially crossed a major threshold in the artificial intelligence race. Sundar Pichai announced via X that the Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the fastest-growing product in the company’s history. While 13 other Google offerings have previously reached the billion-user mark, none scaled to that level as quickly as Gemini. Google has been all-in with Gemini for the last several years, and despite some animosity online, the bet is paying off.
The achievement places Google neck-and-neck with rival OpenAI, which reported its own ChatGPT user figures back in June. It also follows closely on the heels of the company’s Q2 2026 earnings call, where the company celebrated having over 950 million monthly users, with daily active users tripling this past year. The announcement also comes ahead of its Made by Google event, where it’s expected to have more Gemini-powered features launching across Pixel devices.
Where the Numbers Come from and What They Exclude
The headline metric represents a specific user base. It tracks individuals opening the Gemini app or visiting the Gemini web interface to enter a prompt or access Gemini Live. If you used Gemini only once in the past month, you are part of this cohort. Josh Woodward, Google’s VP overseeing Gemini, has expanded on Pichai’s announcement with additional tidbits about how people use the chatbot.
Consumers encounter the technology embedded across Google’s broader ecosystem—powering email organization in Gmail, document summary in Drive, and much more. Gemini is also core to Google’s flagship search experience, with AI Mode and AI Overviews becoming increasingly hard to avoid. However, the 1 billion-user metric has nothing to do with any of that, though; these 1 billion users may also be encountering Gemini in all those places, but that’s not the MAU metric. Platform breakdown metrics show that the app has also secured more than 100 million active users on iOS. Google’s AI Mode in Search, in particular, has achieved a lot of success, with over 1 billion monthly active users globally, but today’s figure refers specifically to the Gemini app, and does not include AI users from other channels.
Voice Interaction and Image Generation Surge
Beyond basic prompt entries, user habits are shifting heavily toward multimodal inputs. Google revealed that 63 percent of Gemini’s active users talk directly to the assistant using the voice feature, and an increasing number of them are “voice-only” users.

Furthermore, among people who use Gemini Live, 20 percent are sharing their camera feeds and screens with the robot to get help. On the visual creation front, those billion users are turning to Google’s AI to make a staggering 150 million images every day. Woodward says that businesses love these Nano Banana images to make marketing materials, but plenty of them are probably memes and jokes being spread around the Internet. They’re all watermarked with SynthID, but that might not help us know what’s true in the future.
Student Usage Patterns and Upcoming Features
Educational use cases have created distinct infrastructure demands for the platform. It’s no secret that students use AI models to do their work (sometimes too much). Woodward says that 38 percent of school-related requests include an attachment, so Google is working on a new batch of study tools to be released in the coming weeks to better support that.
At the same time, technical capabilities continue to expand beneath the surface. The company also continued rolling out new models and features, including Gemini 3.5 Flash, which Google says is designed to improve coding and autonomous AI-agent tasks.
