The rap titan took the stage at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium around 8:37 p.m. local time, donning a Yankees cap and shades for the opening night of his Jay-Z 30 concert series. It was his first solo headline performance in the United Kingdom since October 2013, when he played The O2 during his Magna Carta World Tour.
The evening started with a dramatic introduction from actor Idris Elba. He opened up the show saying the spoken-word intro from the artist’s 2007 song American Gangster
, drawing on his connection to the crime film of the same name. London, you ready?!
Jay-Z asked the crowd before shouting out gratitude to the stadium celebrating these 30 years.
Mini-Fugees Reunion and Surprise Guests Light Up London
Midway through the set, the headliner delivered a succession of high-profile guest appearances. Lauryn Hill stepped out for a mini-Fugees reunion alongside Wyclef Jean, performing the 1995 hit Ready or Not
