The talks zeroed in on high-technology partnerships, specifically chip packaging, business-to-business links, and trade in commodities. India also supports Malaysia’s engagement within the BRICS framework as part of broader Global South integration and efforts toward a free and open Indo-Pacific. Malaysia’s Role in BRICS and Global South Integration
Malaysia’s participation in the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi is in its capacity as a BRICS Partner Country, on the invitation of PM Modi. Malaysia is a partner country to the BRICS grouping along with nations like Cuba, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam, sharing close historical and diaspora links with India. The UAE became a full member of BRICS in January 2024, along with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and Saudi Arabia, while Indonesia joined the grouping as a full member in January 2025.
According to Wisma Putra, the Prime Minister arrived in New Delhi on 11 September 2026 to begin his Working Visit to India, at the invitation of the Prime Minister of India, H.E. Narendra Modi, to participate in the BRICS Leaders’ Summit 2026 on 12–13 September 2026. The Summit is the highest-level platform of BRICS, bringing together Heads of State and Government of BRICS Member and Partner Countries to discuss strategic issues relating to global governance, sustainable development, economic cooperation, trade and investment, digital transformation, and global challenges affecting developing countries.
A Packed Diplomatic Schedule in New Delhi
The bilateral meeting with Malaysia formed part of an exceptionally busy opening day for India’s host schedule as India hosts the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Prime Minister Modi’s engagements included meetings with the leaders of Ethiopia, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, and China. Modi’s schedule placed his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later in the day, at 5:45 pm at Bharat Mandapam.
Modi’s first bilateral engagement was with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali at Hyderabad House at 10 am with an official photo opportunity. At 10:30 am, Modi met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at Hyderabad House, followed by a meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at 11 am. The Prime Minister then met Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung at 11:30 am, also at Hyderabad House. Separately, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 11:30 am with an official photo opportunity.
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Delhi at 12:30 pm on Saturday, traveling directly from the airport to his hotel, and reaching Bharat Mandapam at around 2 pm as leaders gathered for the BRICS Summit. The summit began at 2:30 pm, bringing together leaders for discussions on key global and economic issues. A BRICS leaders’ family photograph was scheduled for 5 pm, followed by a tree-planting programme involving participating leaders at 5:30 pm, continuing into the evening with Prime Minister Modi hosting a dinner for visiting world leaders at 7:30 pm.
Upcoming Kerala Itinerary and Religious Outreach
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will visit the Markaz Central Campus here on Sunday and hold discussions with All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar as part of his five-day visit to India. Mr. Anwar is scheduled to arrive in Keralam after attending the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. His meeting with Mr. Kanthapuram will be held at the Markaz Central Campus, where the Malaysian Prime Minister will also attend a special prayer gathering and a reception at the Markaz Convention Centre.
A discussion involving prominent personalities from the religious, political and social spheres is also scheduled as part of the visit. Mr. Anwar will later visit Madavoor C.M. Valiyullahi Maqam along with Mr. Kanthapuram. Elaborate security arrangements will be put in place in and around the Markaz campus in view of the Prime Minister’s visit and the scheduled programmes, alongside traffic regulations during his arrival. This will be Mr. Anwar’s second visit to Markaz to meet Mr. Kanthapuram, having previously been at Markaz in September 2022, a few weeks before he became Malaysia’s Prime Minister.
