On May 24, Donald Trump Jr. celebrated his wedding in the Bahamas, with scantily clad dancers in stilettos and sailor caps performing for him and his guests. The event, described by his wife Bettina Anderson as everything we dreamed of and more,
was a lavish, three-day party held across a pair of ultra-exclusive private islands. A five-tier funfetti cake was airlifted from Florida, and helicopters and seaplanes descended on the islands before guests settled into oceanfront villas. That night, Trump Jr. lifted his bride into the air while fireworks launched from a barge over the sea. The wedding’s expenses, including the rental of one private island, a fireworks show, and other big-ticket items, were partially funded by Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch close to President Vladimir Putin, according to records reviewed by ProPublica and interviews with three people familiar with the event. Kremlev, the head of the International Boxing Association (IBA), a scandal-plagued sports group financed by Gazprom, paid for the event through an IBA-affiliated entity in Dubai. The guest list numbered around 50, including Trump Jr.’s brother-in-law Jared Kushner, Eric Trump — and Kremlev, an imposing man with a shaved head who speaks limited English. Other attendees noted that Kremlev and his group often stood apart, speaking Russian.
National Security Alarm and Defenses From the Oval Office
Kremlev’s previously unreported relationship with Trump Jr. represents an extraordinary development: a member of Putin’s circle financially supporting the president’s son and gaining intimate access to the Trump family. For a decade, Putin’s government has been accused of efforts to influence American elections, and attempts to make inroads with the Trumps before the 2016 election exploded into controversy that dogged much of the president’s first term. National security experts expressed alarm at Trump Jr. accepting the oligarch’s largesse, with Frank Montoya Jr., a retired career FBI official who held senior counterintelligence roles, stating, If I’m paying for your wedding, at some point, you’re going to owe me something.
Trump Jr.’s spokesperson denied any business relationship with Kremlev, calling him a personal friend met through a mutual friend in the hunting world and bonded over their love of boxing and the outdoors.
Disputed Claims of Repayment

However, ABC News has asked the White House and The Trump Organization for evidence that Trump Jr. paid Kremlev back. Kremlev’s press office told ProPublica that Mr. Kremlev and Mr. Trump Jr have a friendly relationship
and that they first met a couple of years ago.
Bipartisan Condemnation on Capitol Hill
Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy condemned the arrangement as corruption in plain view,
calling Kremlev a convicted criminal
and one of Putin’s favorites. Putin doesn’t pay for a wedding just to be nice,
Murphy argued, linking the gesture to broader concerns about Trump’s ties to Russia. The senator’s remarks came as part of a speech providing commentary on business dealings with the Trump White House. Trump has become one of Putin's most important allies, and so, like everything else in Trump's corrupt world, in his second term, it just becomes this mutually beneficial deal,
Murphy said. Connecticut’s federal delegation, including Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Rosa DeLauro, has been among the most outspoken allies of Ukraine in Congress.
Persistent Scrutiny Over Ties to Russia
The newlyweds defended the spending in a social media post, stating that the fun weekend with friends

the couple posted. It’s unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from.
However, Murphy argued that Kremlev’s ties to Putin and Gazprom made the arrangement an arrangement in plain sight. The IBA, which Kremlev leads, is financed by Gazprom, and Kremlev has been personally sanctioned by the Ukrainian government.
Unresolved Questions and Ethical Flags
The lack of transparency around Kremlev’s motivations and the absence of repayment documentation have left key questions unresolved. While ProPublica’s investigation highlighted the oligarch’s ties to Putin, no definitive evidence connects the wedding to political quid pro quo. Trump Jr. later said on his podcast that the event was just really close friends,
but critics warned that accepting expensive gifts from foreign adversaries could create potentially severe conflicts of interest and potential leverage over the president’s family. As lawmakers and critics expressed concern over the gift, the episode underscores the enduring scrutiny of Trump family ties to Russia. Kremlev’s press office reiterated their friendly relationship with Trump Jr., though ABC News has reached out to Kremlev for comment.
