Israeli Drone Strike Hits Vehicle in Southwestern Syria, Wounding One Man

Israeli forces launched a drone strike on a civilian vehicle in southwestern Syria on Saturday, wounding a man, as regional tensions escalated.

Drone Strike Hits Vehicle Near Beit Jinn

An Israeli drone attack struck a small delivery truck on the main road between the Beit Jinn farmland and the town itself in southwestern Syria, according to Al Jazeera. Syria’s official Alikhbariya channel reported that the strike wounded a civilian driver delivering goods in the Damascus countryside. Neighbours rushed the injured man to a hospital, where a medical source confirmed he is in stable condition with an injury to his right hand.

Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned the strike in the strongest terms. In an official statement, the ministry said the attack constitutes a blatant violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic and its territorial integrity.

Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates stated via Al Jazeera that that attack constituted a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic and the integrity of its territory, as well as a blatant breach of international law, and came in the context of repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory.

The Israeli military confirmed the action in a statement, maintaining that the strike targeted a terrorist who advanced terror attacks in their final stages of preparation in southern Syria. The military added that the activity posed an immediate threat to its forces.

Broader Security Zones and Airbase Bombings

The weekend strike is part of a broader pattern of military activity since the overthrow of long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes across Syria and sent troops into a United Nations-patrolled buffer zone that for decades separated Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan Heights.

Tensions intensified earlier in the week when Israeli forces attacked the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northwestern Idlib province. Israel claimed Turkey was seeking to establish a military presence at the facility, an allegation denied by both Damascus and Ankara.

Muhsen al-Mustafa, a security and strategic researcher at the Omran Center for Strategic Studies in Damascus, noted that Israel currently treats southern Syria as a security zone to fill any vacuum in. Al-Mustafa explained that the Abu al-Duhur bombing signalled that the declared security zone isn’t limited to the south but extends deeper into the country.

Diplomatic Fallout and US Envoy Remarks

Tom Barrack, the United States special envoy for Syria and Iraq and ambassador to Turkey, condemned the raid as an unnecessary escalation and suggested it may have been intended to provoke a conflict with Turkey ahead of upcoming general elections in Israel.

Tom Barrack, United States Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq, stated via Al Jazeera that one theory was that they were just baiting Turkey, and that it was a very aggressive, but perhaps well-received, pre-election concept.

Barrack also stated that Israel did not warn the US before launching the strike. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz countered those assertions, describing the envoy’s remarks as full of inaccuracies.

Meanwhile, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning the latest violence, denouncing the aggression as an unacceptable aggression and a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and a threat to its security and safety.

Ground Incursions and Arrests Across the Southern Governorates

Military actions extended beyond drone attacks. Syrian state news agency SANA reported that Israeli forces carried out artillery shelling and ground incursions across the provinces of Rif Dimashq, Quneitra, and Daraa. In the western countryside of Daraa, troops conducted a raid in Wadi al-Raqad near the town of Jamla, arresting a local resident from al-Muallaqah who worked as a cattle herder.

Further north, artillery shells targeted the outskirts of al-Hamidiyeh in Quneitra and hit Bate al-Warda hill near Beit Jinn. These operations continue to breach the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

A Syrian diplomatic source confirmed that Damascus maintains a commitment to de-escalation, pursuing a security arrangement with Israel through American mediation rooted in the 1974 accord. Despite ongoing hostilities, the Syrian government continues to demand the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Syrian territory.
