A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck a remote area in China’s western Xinjiang region early Tuesday, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The agency quoted the Chinese Earthquake Networks Center as saying that the earthquake shook Wushu County in Aksu Prefecture shortly after two o’clock in the morning local time.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred in the Tian Shan mountain range, a seismically active area, although earthquakes of this size occur fairly infrequently.

The authority added that the largest earthquake in the region in the last century was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in 1978, about 200 kilometers north.

China Central Broadcasting Corporation also reported that several aftershocks had occurred since the main earthquake, with an intensity of 4.5 degrees.

The earthquake was felt by residents of distant areas, citizens of the neighboring countries Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The Russian “TASS” agency reported that people left their homes in the Kazakh capital for fear of its collapse.
