A bear roamed in the town of Liptovsky Mikulas on March 17, where it injured five people. Cellphone footage showed the terrified animal running through the streets between cars, presumably looking for ways to escape. He got in the way of adults and children who didn’t manage to get away in time.

The victims ranged in age from 10 to 72 years old, with bite wounds and scratches, and one nearly lost an eye, it was reported at the time. All five injured were discharged home for treatment after being examined at the hospital.

The incident reinforced earlier calls by some residents and hunters to regulate the bear population by hunting them. A study by the state nature conservation organization SOPSR, carried out in collaboration with researchers at Charles University in Prague, showed that there are between 1,100 and 1,200 free-living bears in Slovakia. They usually get out of the way of people if you notice them in time. However, bears may attack when suddenly confronted or when their cubs are threatened.
