It is recommended to make observations at night
The Geminids meteor shower, flying towards us from the constellation of Gemini, has intensified since Sunday. This is one of the most powerful streams of the year, on the peak date – December 14 – up to 150 shooting “stars” per hour are expected.
As MK was told in INASAN, unlike other meteor showers, the Geminids were born not by a comet, but by a celestial body called 3200 Phaethon. It refers to intermediate objects between comets and asteroids.
Since the Geminids do not fly towards the Earth, but, as it were, catch up with it, their speed is low – up to 35 km per second. This, by the way, makes them more accessible to observation.
Astronomers recommend observing them at night, facing east. The direction from which the stream flies will be just below Orion’s belt – three bright stars.
