A monkey who was alone in a cage became pregnant; Eventually, the zoo officials discovered the secret

by time news

Zoo officials in Japan have found the answer after a monkey who had been alone in a cage for a long time became pregnant. Momo, a 12-year-old gibbon at the Kujukushima Zoo in Nagasaki, became pregnant. Momo gave birth to the baby in February 2021. Although there were male monkeys in neighboring cages, they were separated by strong barbed wire and fences.

The authorities finally conducted a DNA test to find out who the baby’s father was. The father was found to be a 34-year-old gibbon named Ito who lived near Momo’s nest. Finally, the zoo authorities also found out how they mated. There was a small hole in the steel plate used to separate Momo and his partner. This board had a 9 mm diameter hole. Zoo officials say that they may have mated through this hole.

The cub currently weighs about 2 kg (4.4 pounds) and is healthy under Momo’s care, zoo officials said.

Feces and hair taken from Momo, her baby and four other male monkeys were collected and DNA tested. Then the baby’s father was found. Meanwhile, zoo superintendent Jun Yamano told VICE World News that a hole-free board has been installed in the cage to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Like humans, animals need a male and a female to reproduce. But things like lizards reproduce through eggs. Some species such as snakes and sharks can breed in both ways. In 2018, it was big news that RAY babies, a fish species that had been alone for almost nine years, appeared in Australia.
