You could almost feel the excitement in the Petőfi Sándor Cultural Center in Dorozsma on Thursday afternoon. Continuing a 12-year tradition, the Gypsy National Self-Government of Szeged and the Korinta Foundation announced a poetry competition for Roma youth this year.

Now the children who participated in the very first recitation competition are also coming to compete

– noted with pleasure Mihály Nagy, the president of the Gypsy National Self-Government of Szeged.

The goal is to support integration and provide the children with a sense of success. Many of them achieve the first big result of their lives here

he added. He also proudly mentioned that the recitation competition started at the time from the Roma Tanoda, 16 of whose young people in the past 12 years have continued their education, obtained a profession or a high school diploma. He also mentioned that the winner of the recitation competition ten years ago, Márkó Gábor, won his first prize in this competition, and nowadays he works as an actor in Budapest.

A total of thirty brave primary and secondary school contestants stepped into the spotlight with recitations.

The aim of the competition is also to popularize culture. We want young people to experience how good it feels to learn a poem and experience the applause and success that comes with reciting it

– said Éva Gonda, executive director of the Korinta Foundation.

The children were free to choose a poem they liked. Mihály Nagy noted that he is pleased that more and more people choose the works of Roma poets every year.
