Within the framework of World Oceans Day, which is celebrated on June 8, members of the Marine Plankton Dynamics and Climate Change Program (DiPlaMCC) of the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) teamed up with conceptual artist Nandon and citizen divers from the Escualo Underwater Activities Center (CASE) to carry out an urban installation along 7 kilometers in the coastal sector of the city of Mar del Plata, with phrases that invite you to learn about the importance of the oceans and seas.

World Oceans Day highlights the fundamental role of sustainable management of the oceans and seas for life on our planet and for our future. The oceans and seas make our planet a habitable place: they produce half of the oxygen we breathe and are home to 80% of the known variety of living organisms, providing much of our food. They are the regulator of the climate on Earth, both natural variations and those produced by our human actions.

This initiative, which will take place from Thursday, June 1 to Thursday, June 8, proposes placing posters on public roads, with different phrases that refer to our sea and to the different topics that are investigated in the DiPlaMCC Program.

The posters contain a QR code through which people can access the INIDEP institutional website to find out, in a friendly way, about the importance of the oceans and seas for life, the goods and services they provide and the problems they face. . In addition, it provides details on the research carried out by the DiPlaMCC-INIDEP Program regarding the study of long-term changes in the ocean associated with climate change, ocean acidification and other associated problems, as well as microplastic pollution.

The event, sponsored by the international project “NANO-DOAP: Global study of productivity, deoxygenation and acidification of the oceans in selected sites” of the network “NF-POGO Alumni Network for Oceans”, is part of the official event “World Oceans Day 2023” of the United Nations Organization (HIM).

About the artist behind the posters

Fernando Salimbene, better known as Nandon, is a 28-year-old artist who currently lives and works in the City of Buenos Aires. He develops his work in a conceptual way, carrying out urban interventions in different cities in Argentina, installing hand-painted wooden signs, with his own striking aesthetic. They stand out for giving new meaning to an already known medium: that of those signs and posters that flood the City, written by hand and also printed, offering a service such as “Electrician, call here”. Nandon gives another meaning to this format, takes the use of the word and plays with different phrases.

The purpose of his work is to work on themes that challenge society and interact with the public that circulates through the streets to leave a reflection that allows the formulation of meaning and impact in cultural construction. His most popular phrase is “I sell my ego” and he questions the ego as if it were a new consumer product.

Nandon began to carry out urban interventions in the city of Mar del Plata in 2019, due to its history as a tourist and cultural production center, so that art reaches the general public, leaving art centralization spaces such as galleries or museums. , where only people who are already linked to the art world interact.

The public understands that the enigmatic aquamarine and red posters are the work of an artist. This acceptance, which returned Nandon and its posters as an integral part of the city, is the driving force behind this new intervention, which provides information and awareness about the importance and characteristics of our sea and how it is indispensably linked with our everyday life.
