The group of hitmen was traveling in at least three vehicles on a dirt road, where they came across a military convoy that was carrying out operations against organized crime. In the confrontation, a soldier was murdered and one more was wounded, while six armed civilians were killed and another suffered injuries bullet. The injured hitman was arrested with five other accomplices. The Mexican Army reported that after the confrontation, a total of 12 assault rifles, of the AK-47 and AR-15 types, were seized from the civilians, as well as dozens of useful cartridges and three vehicles. The detainees were made available to the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), in the city of Morelia, which is investigating which drug cartel they belong to.

Hidalgo is a municipality located in the eastern part of the state of Michoacán, where the self-styled cartels Los Correa, Los Caballeros Templarios, La Familia Michoacana and Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) operate. Mexican authorities have identified a bloody fight between these criminal organizations in Michoacán, which dispute control of the production and trafficking of drugs such as marijuana and methamphetamine, as well as other criminal activities such as extortion of businessmen and kidnappings.
