A small Taj Mahal in Tamil Nadu.. a castle of love built by a British general for his wife.. Do you know where it is?

by time news

If the symbol of love is Taj Mahal, then it immediately comes to mind. Do you know about the monument of love erected by the British commander for his beloved wife on the Rayakottai hill in Krishnagiri? When the British captured Rayakottai, which was under the possession of Tipu Sultan, the British government appointed Major John Campbell Glover as the head of Rayakottai.

Aha Jamaluddin, who was a soldier in the army of Tipu Sultan’s father Hyder Ali, was attached to the British army. Above the fort was Glover’s Mahal. A place was allotted to the Jamaluddin family near it. British commander Glover fell in love with Jamaluddin’s daughter Megharunnissa.

She was stunned when she asked, “I love you, Mekarunnisa… can we get married?” Glover stands opposite. He was a captain in the East India Company’s Madras Regiment. Megarunnissa was the daughter of an ordinary soldier. How could she marry an English general? Glover’s words tear down barriers and make love rise and blossom. Above all the lovers that history praises and admires, the Glover-Macrunnissa love couple stood out in love and character.

Megarunnissa

Her relatives did not approve of Mekarunissa marrying a Christian. Mekarunissa was steadfast in her love. Glover led the Second Burma War and returned with the loss of an arm in a cannon fire. Mekarunissa was shocked to know her husband’s condition. That worry drove her into a deep sickness. The life of that romantic couple, where the pleasure was creeping, turned into misery.

One fateful day, after leaving Glover in agony, Megarunnissa mourns Ningat. Glover was unable to accept the loss. Thinking of erecting a monument to his beloved wife, he invited sculptors from North India and built a mandapam with magnificent carvings at her burial place. It became his duty to walk every morning from his residence Panchapalli and sit near this monument. Eventually, he built a small hut near a banyan tree at a place called Zakheri, 10 km from Rayakottai. He died on the spot in August 1876.

Rayakottai

Amidst the impenetrable rocks of the Raikottai hill, only the palace built by Glover for his beloved wife still stands unscathed. It is the demand of the people of the area that the concerned administration should restore this love symbol located in the famous love symbol of Rayakottai and gain the goodwill of the lovers.
