A 656-foot-deep, 82-foot-wide sinkhole suddenly formed in Chile in western South America, doubling in size in a week.

Chile’s National Geological and Mining Service is closely monitoring changes in the crater to see if ongoing mining activity could have contributed to the event, as the Alcabarosa copper mine is located near the crater.

While the cause and nature of the crater is not clear, the mining site has been closed and a 100 meter perimeter around the crater is being monitored.
