Former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief economist Olivier Blanchard warns against losing sight of social inequality. It is “perceived as a very big problem in all countries, and I don’t think you can ignore it,” he said in an interview with the FAZ on the sidelines of a conference by the Center for Economic Policy Research at the Paris School of Economics. This applies in particular to his home country France.
There is a gap between perception and reality, emphasizes Blanchard, who will be 75 in December, is considered a New Keynesian and worked for the IMF until 2015. As far as France is concerned, the actual inequality is lower than in many other countries. This has not increased over the past 20 years, as many believed, but rather decreased.
